Our View: Hits & Misses

HIT: To all of our U.S. military veterans, whom we honor on this day.
It's encouraging to see so many events in the region to celebrate Veterans Day. This is not a day that promotes wars or any military agendas - it's simply a time to show gratitude for the people who give up so much to defend us.

Going forward, let's all try harder to thank veterans not just today, but throughout the year.

MISS: To a string of serious farm accidents in the area.

Last week a Cato man was killed in a farm accident, marking the third week in a row that a farm accident has either taken someone's life or caused critical injuries.

Society too often takes farmers for granted, not just for the work they do to produce our food, but also for taking on the inherent physical risks that can come with the job.

MISS: To the Syracuse University football team, for yet another lackluster performance against a mediocre team.

What's tough about Saturday's game was that for a moment, it seemed like things were finally looking up for this program. The Orange, coming off an upset victory over Louisville the week before, jumped out to an early lead against Rutgers.

But it didn't take long for Rutgers to come back and then establish dominance.

HIT: To last week's Liberty Big Band concert held at Auburn's East Middle School.

The concert was the latest in a series of military band performances brought to the area by the Italian Heritage Society of Auburn and Cayuga County as a gift to the community.

Professor Joseph Camardo has always put tremendous effort into making these shows a reality.

Last week's performance did not disappoint. The band, part of the U.S. Air Force Band of Liberty, played to a packed house that enjoyed every minute of the uplifting music.

We all look forward to the next one.
