Parents, please quit smoking for your children

Monday, November 10, 2008 11:28 PM EST

The Great American Smoke-Out will take place on Nov. 20 this year. I hope a lot of people will mark that day on their calendars as a reminder to quit smoking.
I also hope a lot of parents will think about quitting on that day, especially those who smoke in their cars with the windows rolled up and their children in the back seat.

Do people understand that secondhand smoke is harder on children because their lungs haven't fully developed yet? Children who live with smokers are more likely to get asthma and have colds that hang on forever. The children can't escape from the smoke.

Parents, please think about quitting smoking this year for your children. There are a lot of people out there willing to help you - just ask.
