The Internal Revenue Service is looking for about 383,000 people whom it wants to pay more than $266 million.
Those statistics apply to the economic stimulus and regular tax refund checks that have been returned to the IRS by the U.S. Postal Service as a result of mailing address mistakes.
“People across the country are missing tax refunds and stimulus checks. We want to get this money into the hands of taxpayers where it belongs,#” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman in a press release. “We are committed to making the process as easy as possible for taxpayers to update their addresses with the IRS and get their checks.”
To get the check, the taxpayer simply needs to update his or her address with the IRS.
But how do you know if you have a check that could be coming your way? The Citizen has posted a searchable database online at auburnpub.com/IRSchecks that allows visitors to search by name or mailing zip code. The database covers the entire country.
Time is running out for people owed stimulus checks. The IRS said it needs to have address changes reported by Nov. 28.
If you're name is in the database, there are instructions for what you should do next.
Taxpayers without Internet access can call 1 (866) 234-2942 to check on possible stimulus checks or 1 (800) 829-1954 to inquire about regular tax refund checks.
