State alters truck restriction road plans

ALBANY - State transportation officials are significantly scaling back a proposal to limit truck traffic on rural roads in the Finger Lakes region.
Transportation Department planners this week released a revised set of proposed regulations that confines the restrictions to seven specific highway routes.

They initially proposed making big trucks stick to interstates and other major highways and use lesser routes only when they're the only ways to and from their destination or under exceptional conditions such as severe weather.

Charles Carrier, a DOT spokesman, says the agency narrowed the proposal in part because federal officials said the first plan might conflict with federal highway guidelines.

The routes DOT proposes making off-limits to trucks are:

- Route 41 between Route 11 in Homer and Route 20 in Skaneateles.

- Route 41A between Route 41 in Homer and Route 20 in Skaneateles.

- Route 90 between U.S. 11 in Homer U.S. 20 in Montezuma.

- Route 38 between Route 90 in Locke and the Auburn city line.

- Route 79 between Route 11 in Lisle and the Ithaca city line.

- Route89 between Ithaca and Route 20 in Seneca Falls.

- Route96 between the Ithaca City line and Route 414 in Ovid, and between Route 414 in Romulus and Route 20 in Waterloo.

" They should look more into changing the driving time for drivers instead of limit use of roads. If we didnt have such strict times as far as only 11hrs to drive, so that means no pulling over taking a nap for 30min then driving, that uses up your time none would be so mad but these roads can shorten our trips bye 1hr or more at times. With such time we have now any of that means being able to drive legal or shutting down 1hr from home. " The entire concept needs to scapped! It's just another utter waste of money and effort, by a few people. "
