Not watered down

Two local girls swim teams, and 28 swimmers, are competing in the Section III swimming championships at Nottingham High School this week.

Auburn senior Kelsey Roe swims the 100 butterfly in a meet against Fayetteville-Manlius and Utica on Oct. 15 at the Auburn YMCA. Roe will compete in four events today at the Section III championships.
While the diving competition began on Wednesday, the swim portion starts this morning - and look for both Auburn and Skaneateles to finish among the top teams in their respective classes.

The Lakers have dominated their way to three consecutive Class C titles, not that they are expecting a fourth one to be guaranteed.

“Our goal this year is to finish in the top three,” Skaneateles coach Jill King said. “With such a small team, we really have a good chance to swim the best we can and improve our times. Last year was an unbelievable win, a pleasant surprise. If things go that way again, great, but if not, that's OK too. Our expectations are high.”

As they should be. With a smaller team, the Lakers have sent 13 athletes, including independent swimmer Elizabeth Cannie, a Marcellus student and diver Kaela Fiutak. Cannie will be competing in Class B and her swim will not count towards Skaneateles' team score.

“We don't want to swim against her,” King said. “I'm really proud of her - we know she's happy to be a Laker, but proud to be a Mustang. She's still one of us.”

Also swimming for Skaneateles is Britton Weber (IM, back, both freestyle relays), Keri Steves (200 free, 500 free), Jessica Mevec (500 free), Brigid Clary (IM, 100 back), Mandi Steves (200 medley relay, 100 back), Holly Ross (50 free, 100 fly, 200 medley relay, 200 free relay), Gaelyn Price (100 free, 100 breast, 200 medley relay, 400 free relay), Sarah Sawyer (200 free, 500 free, both freestyle relays), Paige Williams (500 free, 100 breast), Racheal DeWitt (200 free, 500 free, 400 free relay), Nikki Cole (50 free, 100 free, 200 medley relay, 200 free relay) and Jennifer Sawyer (200 free, 100 fly).

In Class A, Auburn will have some stiff competition as usual, but coach Tom Clary Jr. also believes his club can finish well.

“There are a lot of other powerhouses going against us - Liverpool, CBA, Fayetteville-Manlius,” he said. “Our goal is to qualify all three relays into finals.”

That's something Auburn has
