Abortion stances must be considered

Sunday, November 2, 2008 12:05 AM EDT

There are many moral failures - such as unjust wars and a widening gap between the rich and poor - for which we will need to answer to future generations.
But no ethical failure is as great as a national policy of permitting lethal violence against a whole class of innocent human beings, the preborn. If you#'ve never examined the evidence of what abortion is and does, you can view pictures of aborted babies on web sites such as www.prolife.com.

In his article, “Obama#'s Abortion Extremism,” published this month in the journal Public Discourse, Princeton University Professor of Jurisprudence Robert P. George writes: “Barack Obama is the most extreme pro-abortion candidate ever to seek the office of President of the United States.”

On July 17, 2007, Barack Obama told the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, “The first thing I will do as president is to sign the Freedom of Choice Act. On this fundamental issue, I will not yield.” If enacted, the Freedom of Choice Act would prohibit and retroactively nullify all federal and state-level restrictions on abortion, including parental notification requirements, informed consent laws, and bans on partial-birth abortion. There are many issues at stake in next Tuesday#'s election, but abortion is the most important because it is the most direct assault on human life. Obama believes an entire class of human beings has no rights. When John McCain was asked, “When is a baby entitled to human rights?” he answered, “At the moment of conception.”

" Karl, you have been exposed to CVNs venom for too long. You are starting to sound like him. "

" When I was down and out in 2003, in NYS, you DID have to attend job training AND take an assigned job in order to get social services unless you were disabled with a doctor's note (which I had). I still had to attend several meetings having to do with employment -- it would have cracked me up if I weren't in such dire straits. There I sat (in a wheelchair or with my walker) with two master's degrees and 17 years experience in an academic field and I had to listen to lectures on how to dress for a job interview and how to behave on the job. The bottom line for me was that there was about a 2 1/2-3 year gap when there just were no openings, not only in my field, but in any related field for which I would have been qualified, in about a 3-4 hour radius of Sherwood, where I was living at the time. Temp agencies refused to even LOOK at my resume, saying I was "over qualified," but jobs for which I WAS qualified did not exist, and I was months handicapped -- and without social services. As I've said before -- there is no safety net, and there definitely is no program for qualified professional people who fall on hard times - we fall through the cracks. "

" brew, that's a GREAT idea about slowly weaning someone off--like two weeks, time enough to get your first paycheck. That really would make more sense! "

" One problem with welfare and food stamps is that the system is designed to make it very hard to get off the program. As soon as you try to find employment and take the best job you can find, the system immediately takes your benefits away. The job you took is low paying but has potential for advancement so you want to go for it but you lose your food stamps, health care and welfare check and maybe your subsidised apartment. Why don't they let you gradually get off the program until you have had a chance to get on your feet and encourage you to seek employment not discourage you. Also mandate job training for receiving benefits even if we have to pay for child care while they train. Right now the health care system is in dire need of eldercare employees. We will give you benefits but you must train for a job and we will help you with training and childcare. Don't accept job training, no benefits. Unless you have a true medical reason verified by a reputable doctors examination. Welfare would then supply us with a workforce in occupations that are needed for the betterment of our economy. Until then I can see why many can't get off the dole. "

" I grew up with a single mom who struggled to get off public assistance again and again -- but growing up in Detroit as the auto industry bottomed out in a family which was hit with a serious of personal economic tragedies within the larger situation made it hard to stand on your own. We were on and off social services more times than I can tell, but my mom just kept working to get us all off it.

So, we had food stamps often. My mother worked hard to make sure we had good, healthy food even when we had little to no money. I don't think a Twinkie or Ho-Ho ever crossed the threshold of our house. We ate broccoli and cauliflower with cheese for dinner, or beans and rice with greens on the side.

There are lots of people who make poor dietary choices, whether they are spending their own money or food stamps, but I frankly wouldn't want to live in a world where the government told me what I was allowed to eat. Education is what is needed, not draconian laws telling people what they can and cannot do right down to every little item they put in their grocery carts. "

" I was inspired by a young girl in NYC who just turned 18 two weeks ago and she did not vote for Obama, but she was celebrating a historic moment and the democratic process. She said he won and he is our leader. I think she gets it better than most. John McCain showed his moral character in his concession speech. This is the first time I have spelled his name right since the campaign began. I respect the man and his character. I hope the parties can work together. "

" With all due respect, teacher1, Carlin was speaking about CONSERVATIVES, not the entire population. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrXvDXVhqfU

If conservatives had their way, they'd eliminate all of the programs you mentioned in your post. I agree that food stamps shouldn't be used for junk food, but you're painting a whole group of people with a pretty broad brush, don't you think? Surely, you don't believe that everyone on public assistance uses their food stamps exclusively to buy junk food, do you? That would be like me saying that every tenured teacher is overpaid and indifferent to their students' educational progress. "

" What do you mean once these babies are born no one wants to know them? Explain to me then, why it is that every time I go to the dr.'s office I seem to be the only one with "real" insurance. Everyone else is whipping out their welfare cards. Explain to me why the woman in front of me at Wegmans the other day was buying a ridiculous amount of junk food and soda with her welfare card, not a bit of healthy food for the young child sitting on top of her stroller. What do you call Universal Pre-K? Head Start? Free and reduced lunches in the public schools? Forgotten, yeah right. "

" Great quote budobrubbie. What about all the born that half this country doesn't want killed when we wage needless wars, both on our side and those being attacked by us. Americans like to kill. People, Animals, trees, fresh water. Our nature is to poison and kill. Its easier that way- the easy way out. USA USA! "

No neonatal care, no day care, no Head Start, no school lunch, no food stamps, no welfare, no nothing. If you're pre-born, you're fine. If you're pre-school you're *#%&'ed." - George Carlin "

" What right do people like the Lickona or anybody else to tell somebody what to do with their body? There are many reasons a woman has an abortion, and I believe they are personal and nobody elses business. Are they or the rest of the do gooders going to feed, cloth and take care of these children. As I said there a many reasons a woman has an abortion and its nobody else business. "

Of course, ignorant people like this will put the entire future of LIVING PEOPLE at stake over the imagined "rights" of the "unborn". More religious ignorance!!!

" No one is "pro-abortion." You show your prejudice from the get-go with your nomenclature. Yes, indeed, be sure you know the candidates' stances on abortion and be sure to choose the one who preserves your right to decide for yourself, especially if you've been raped or are a victim of incest, but also if you want to choose to keep your child. The choice is yours and that right must be preserved. "
