ALBANY -- New York corrections officials plan to consolidate housing units at 14 state prisons, merge two infirmaries and close farms at a dozen prisons to save $8.7 million.
No changes were announced for the two facilities in Cayuga County -- Cayuga Correctional Facility in Moravia and Auburn Correctional Facility in Auburn.

It did announce the elimination of an inmate work crew out of Butler Correctional Facility in Wayne County.

The Department of Correctional Services says it anticipates cutting 134 jobs for correction officers, mostly eliminating vacant jobs but including 44 through attrition. The agency says the prison population has declined to 61,032. There are another 748 inmates at the Willard Drug Treatment Campus.

Gov. David Paterson ordered budget cuts at agencies to reduce deficits. The vegetable, beef and dairy farms help supply prison food and employ 39 guards, 41 civilians and 188 inmates.

" Because it costs more to produce the food in a prison farm than it costs to buy it wholesale. They are trying to save the taxpayers money. Every time a work crew goes out in the community it costs guard salaries to supervise the crews. The farmers barely make a living and they don't pay for the salaries of guards. When the government tries to save tax dollars they still get criticized. It's no wonder that we don't get quality people in gov. service. "
