NEW YORK -- The fight for control of New York's Senate that Democrats thought they won could stretch on for weeks with four lawmakers holding the key to the balance of power.
The four Democrats were meeting Wednesday with Republicans to discuss how they might serve the GOP and what's in it for them should they defect. Republicans and Democrats familiar with the meeting spoke anonymously to The Associated Press because leaders wouldn't confirm the talks.
Tuesday night, Democrats knocked two Republicans out of the Senate to take a 32-30 advantage.
On the table is a possible power sharing agreement or a hostile takeover. Republicans would use the swing Democrats to take control of the Senate — then reward the four Democratic defectors with lucrative committee chairmanships.
