The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office has issued an arrest warrant for the man they believe threatened a Sterling resident before severely damaging his truck with an ax on Saturday, deputies said.
Deputies said they are looking for Kelly R. Byrne, 34, with a last known address of 13885 Humphrey Road, Sterling.

Byrne is wanted on two felony charges, criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree criminal mischief; and two misdemeanors, menacing in the second degree and criminal trespass in the third-degree.

Byrne is accused of staying in a hunting camper on Short Cut Road when the victim showed up to check on his property. After the altercation, the victim told deputies his assailant fled in a southwesterly direction on the county nature trail with the ax in hand.

Deputies said they do not believe Byrne is armed and dangerous because the ax was returned by Sunday.

Deputies said Byrne has been known to hitchhike.
