Dumping trash hurts rest of neighborhood

Monday, November 3, 2008 11:10 PM EST

I needed a place to vent so this seemed as good a place as any.
We live on Dump Road - sorry I mean Pump Road. There is an area near our home that could pass as the town dump.

People come from all over to use their dumpster for their trash which sits in their front yard. People who live around them keep their homes in decent shape.

If we ever wanted to sell our home, it would be very difficult since the junk is everywhere.

Across the road and even down in back of the house. We work hard to keep our property looking nice as do all the people in this area.

Some neighbors have even complained to the Town of Brutus, but to no avail. Since it is one particular person who owns and rents this property, it seems only fair he should be held accountable.

Thanks for listening

" I am the resident whom Winifred is writing about. First, I apologize to Winifred and everyone in my neighborhood.
I don't blame Winnie for the letter she wrote by any means!! I acually thank her. I understand the mess in my yard is out of control. I have been telling my husband this for months. Its even at the point where my 11 year old son tries to clean it up for me. This problem is effecting my marriage. Last Thursday I went to the Town of Brutus and filed a complaint against myself in hopes that when we do receive papers from the town my husband will finally clean it up. If I could clean it up myself I would. The dumpster is in our yard for my husband and his coworkers to discard of scrap from work. We are aware of the people who have put their garbage in it on occasion. I am tired of this problem and I hate that it has effected my relationships with my neighbors, especially Winnie. I just hope my neighbors remember before the dumpster was here I did in fact have a nice yard. The mess and the dumpster will be gone in the next couple days. As for across the street and the back of the house, those messes are not ours. "

" Unauthorized use of a dumpster is "theft of services" and is subject to arrest. If you let your friends put trash in your dumpster you are not violating any laws. "

" What's also disgraceful, and in my opinion equivalent to stealing a service like cable, is the people who use the dumpsters in apartment complexes. And I'm not talking about the people who live in the complexes. I'm talking about people who drive up,"under the shade of night" and dump their garbage in the dumpsters, rather than pay to have it removed. Cheap and pathetic. "

" Get some dumpster regulations passed in your town. Mandate fenced enclosures for dumpsters, locked covers, all trash to be contained only in the dumpster, licenses and fees for dumpsters and annual inspections. If you don't have regulations you can't control problems. If they violate the regulations they lose their license and a notice is given to the trash hauler to remove the unlicensed dumpster. You can't depend on your neighbor's common sense so rely on regulations. "
