Cabins at Fair Haven State Park will not be available for rental this winter. The park was included in a state-wide reduction of staff, special services and campgrounds intended to save money from the state's bleeding budget. The New York State Parks Services announced the reductions as of Nov. 1. So far 75 parks and historic sites are affected.
Fair Haven usually keeps eight of its 40 or so cabins open for rental in the winter, according to office personnel at the park.
“Statewide the cutbacks could save about $4 million in utility and personnel expenses,” said Dan Keith, spokesman for the parks service in Albany.
Keith said that most of the parks in the Finger Lakes region would see little or no effect, as most do not offer winter cabins. He noted that the cut services would be restored in the spring.
He confirmed that all parks are available for day use. Allegany and Letchworth parks will be open at night. Cabin prices range from $170 to $470 per week, depending on size and amenities. All cabins come with electricity, refrigerator, and stove/hotplate. The winter cabins are heated with propane. Amenities include porches, running water, toilet, shower, living room, bedrooms, prime location and prime condition.
“Unless you are told otherwise,” Eileen Larrabee, parks spokeswoman, said in a press release, “parks are available for day use. They're public grounds. But at the same time we have a concern for the safety of patrons, and we also are always concerned about vandalism.”
