WATERTOWN -- Police say a man was killed by a passing motorist when he and a friend cut across a northern New York interstate highway to get to a restaurant on the other side of the highway.
Jefferson County deputies say the accident Sunday night on Interstate 81 also caused a second separate accident that left seven others injured.
Police have not yet identified the victim.
Police say the second accident was caused by gawking motorists.
One person suffered serious injuries and was taken to a Syracuse hospital. The other six people were taken to Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown.
The interstate was temporarily shut down after the accident, which remains under investigation.
