SYRACUSE -- Police in Syracuse say a 19-year-old who was being held in a county jail cell strangled himself with his bedsheets.
Michael Tew of Syracuse was found dead in his cell at the Onondaga County Justice Center at about 7 a.m. Sunday. He had been held without bail for more than a week after being charged with second-degree arson and violating the terms of his probation. His probation stemmed from a 2006 incident in which he brought a loaded handgun to Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
Tew was to appear in court Monday
Sheriff Kevin Walsh said Tew was alone in a two-person cell when he hung himself from the bunk bed using a bedsheet.
Walsh said there was no prior indication that Tew was suicidal.
