I don't understand how we can put someone on the moon and can't get the voting machines to work properly. I guess we're putting the money in the wrong place again.

What I'm trying to figure out is how did Sarah Palin jump from mayor to the governor in the state of Alaska because I've never heard of such a thing before.

Anybody that votes for McCain deserves him. Why would anyone vote for Bush's puppet?

I never voted for Bush, but he stole the election for eight years, and the warmonger and his stooge decided to invade Iraq, why? They had nothing to do with 9/11.

" Professional athletes, by and large, are obscenely overpaid anyway. That's a good place to pick up tax money, though the fella who commented he hopes the money is better spent has a good point -- we all do, esp. those who can ill afford much in the way of taxes at all, for whom every penny means more than thousands to do to millionaires.

Words, well delivered, by a charismatic speaker, can have a lot of power -- power to motivate and move people to action, to convince the wavering, to inspire. Words can reach the mind -- or the heart, can offer comfort, can bring hope. Words can explain and bring clarity just as easily as they can obscure meaning in the hands of the dishonest. Words can convey all that is in the human mind and heart and share it with others. Never underestimate the power of language. "

" Quotes from wealthy professional athletes:

Not to worry, Saints linebacker Scott Fujita said.

“We heard so much about how he's going to be taxing everybody who makes over $250,000. That's everybody in our business. So everyone's going to be affected by that,” he said. “And my argument to them was maybe there's a chance our tax dollars are going to be spent a little more wisely than they have in the past.”

New York Jets nose tackle Kris Jenkins thought about his taxes, but, more importantly, his three young children and his half-brother serving in Iraq.

“I can't be selfish enough to think about keeping all of my money and just being in a better tax bracket because I have to be sure that I do my part for the world to be a better place for my kids,” he said.

Now if more of those blue bloods, aka - conservative Republicans thought in this fashion, our country would truly be an even better place. These athletes know very well that its the little people that contribute to their economic wealth - and its these athletes who are more than happy to pay their share to ensure the system continues to function and provide essential services to people who truly benefit from them. Yes, the system is not full proof - there are some who abuse it. But you cant punish the rest who are deserving of it. "

HYPOCRITE!
And anyway, I would disagree wholeheartedly.
You didn't just lose because of that--you lost because you failed to see that America is changing, and for the worst BECAUSE OF YOUR POLICIES!
In the Reagan Years, you tried the same things-and we got ANOTHER recession. An screeching halt to the economy, Because you can't just turn loose the GREED of your party's base and expect that country to survive like a corpse sucked dry by a few very hungry parasites.
Face it Chris--YOUR policies have been PROVEN TO FAIL--TWICE, NOW! Selfishness and Xenophobia are NOT sound American governing principles!!!!
Obama's policies will mirror Clinton's to a large degree, I expect--and that left the country with HUGE surpluses.
NO matter how much you try to spin that, you can't argue it.
And incidentally, they drummed Bill and the Dems out of the White House by paralyzing his administration with phony, BS "Morals" and "Values" crap, to pander to the radical Religious Right-NOT because of anything to do with the record of the country, In fact, one could argue--and I DO--that the country could be easily distracted by these red herrings precisely BECAUSE the country was doing so well! " “Landslide”!
334 electoral votes.
THREE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-FOUR ELECTORAL VOTES!
A “Landslide” indeed!
It wasn’t even close.
What we saw in this election was, and is, a COMPLETE REPUDIATION of the policies of the Republican Party, and Conservatism as a flawed, and failed, governing philosophy!
Chris, cm, movedsouth, cheeko,--do you realize the historicity and significance of this election?
“Socialism” didn’t matter.
Bill Ayres didn’t matter.
Reverend Wright didn’t matter.
ACORN didn’t matter.
Even Abortion didn’t matter. (In fact, South Dakota’s draconian anti-abortion bill FAILED, as did a similar one in Colorado!)
In every period in history, when The People have been oppressed and trampled underfoot by the Rich and the Powerful, there has been a Revolution. An uprising. A populist riot-in-the-dungeons.
That’s what we’ve seen here on Tuesday night. This was our new Peasant’s Revolt. Our new French Revolution. The New American Revolution! Let a New Renaissance follow!
Our country said loudly-and-clearly, “ENOUGH!”
It’s about time!\
The Republican and Conservative Parties have been shown to be out-of-touch with America. Their hate-mongering, race-baiting, issue-concocting brand of divisive politics and rhetorical dishonesty has finally reached the limit of its effectiveness.
My hope for the Future is restored. The Supreme Court will be safe. That was “The Big Prize”! The Religious can now go back to begging their God for favors that will never come. Hopefully they will realize that if “God” was “on their side”, perhaps “He” would have portended and swung a better outcome for their theocratic dreams?
Perhaps the Republican Party finally throw overboard the Rush Limbaughs, the Sean Hannittys, the Ann Coulters and Bill O’Reillly’s of the world, and their poisonous rhetoric. And maybe this nation can get around to healing the damage done by them and the party which they have represented? A new America for all—Gay, Straight, Religious, Godless, Black, White, Conservative, Liberal—hope is restored! "

Nature -- Lefwich was the backup for Pittsburgh not Washington, so when Big Ben Rothlisberger went down with a re-injured shoulder when the score was a close 10-6, the Steelers put Lefwich in and he led them to a 23-6 victory. Lefwich hasn't been much the past few years, so that was a surprise. The game was expected to be very close, and I had given the Redskins the edge since they were playing in Washington.

I disagree with specific views, and I get disgusted with knee-jerk reactions as well as the "my party is better than your party" and "my party, do or die" attitudes -- people who just take whatever view their party tells them to take.

I disagree with Karl sometimes, and also am unhappy with him at times when he attacks others, but my general good rapport with him has nothing to do with politics. He and I grew a mutual respect outside of political discussions, so I can criticize him for something specific but still retain an underlying friendly and respectful interaction -- because we took the time to establish respect first.

Many others here take potshots at me (as well as lots of other people) even though I try not to ever engage in that kind of behavior towards them; these people did NOT take any time to establish any kind of respectful rapport. I still try not to be a jerk, but I don't owe those pot-shot-takers anything.

I have lots of problems with the Democratic Party, and I do make note of them here -- like on the subject of immigration, for example, or NAFTA (which actually had bipartisan support still, which I find inconceivable).

But mostly, the issues which upset me the most get no positive action from EITHER party. Mostly I get upset about the corporate destruction of this country: environmental, economic AND political/social. On that score, ALL of federal government is in their pockets or under their thumbs, as is most of the State's government, and a good share of local as well, esp. where I live.

A non-partisan person can have a respectful rapport with a partisan person without it making her partisan herself -- that's a misleading accusation and I want to set it straight right here. "

" Well, farming is a dangerous profession. Farmer Guy had to drop his insurance as completely unaffordable because the cost is so high for anyone in farming. I think attitude can be a bag part of the problem, not only with farming, but with any work with dangerous machinery -- get a little overconfident, a bit cocky, poo-pooing safety precautions your dad taught you because "I know what I am doing" -- next thing you know, some careless little slip sucks you into a piece of machinery or you roll the tractor. There's also a lot of pressure in farming -- things that have to be done fast and hard before the weather changes or the crop sprouts or something, so it's much too easy to skip a safety step. You can lose some good people on just a little carelessness.

I don't know if there are more than usual or if things just come in clusters. Farmer Guy just lost an elderly aunt (peacefully, in her time) and at work someone lost a close friend in a motorcycle accident and another fella had his fiance hit by a car two days before the wedding (which is today) -- she's going to be alright, as the car was in a parking lot and not going fast. But all those things happened the same day.

It's probably just the human mind trying to find non-existent patterns in chaos, but it can feel like the stars are lined up wrong or something.

I know a bunch of Hares, but not the fella who got killed. My deepest sympathies to his family -- as I said, farming is a dangerous line of work and if you drop you caution just once, if it's the wrong time, there can be a tragedy. "

" Karl this isn't from "faux" news as you like to call it. Your comments on this?

A woman who has been quietly living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago, The Associated Press has learned.

Zeituni Onyango, 56, referred to as "Aunti Zeituni" in Obama's memoir, was instructed to leave the United States by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request, a person familiar with the matter told the AP late Friday. This person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to discuss Onyango's case.

Information about the deportation case was disclosed and confirmed by two separate sources, one of them a federal law enforcment official. The information they made available is known to officials in the federal government, but the AP could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved in its release.

Onyango's refusal to leave the country would represent an administrative, non-criminal violation of U.S. immigration law, meaning such cases are handled outside the criminal court system. Estimates vary, but many experts believe there are more than 10 million such immigrants in the United States.

The AP could not reach Onyango immediately for comment. No one answered the telephone number listed in her name late Friday. It was unclear why her request for asylum was rejected in 2004.

Onyango is not a relative whom Obama has discussed in campaign appearances and, unlike Obama's father and grandmother, is not someone who has been part of the public discussion about his personal life.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, Kelly Nantel, said the government does not comment on an individual's citizenship status or immigration case.

Onyango's case — coming to light just days before the presidential election — led to an unusual nationwide directive within Immigrations and Customs Enforcement requiring any deportations prior to Tuesday's election to be approved at least at the level of ICE regional directors, the U.S. law enforcement official told the AP.

The unusual directive suggests that the Bush administration is sensitive to the political implications of Onyango's case coming to light so close to the election.

One of the sources acknowledged he was not a supporter of Obama or John McCain and said he has no plans to vote on Tuesday. He said that was not a motive for releasing the information.

Kenya is in eastern Africa between Somalia and Tanzania. The country has been fractured in violence in recent years, including a period of two months of bloodshed after December 2007 that killed 1,500 people.

The disclosure about Onyango came just one day after Obama's presidential campaign confirmed to the Times of London that Onyango, who has lived quietly in public housing in South Boston for five years, was Obama's half aunt on his father's side.

It was not immediately clear how Onyango might have qualified for public housing with a standing deportation order. "

" 401k's are nice, but my pension is the one that feeds me. I know what it's like to not know how to pay mortgage etc. I scratched to pay bills and had NO money for 401k. Boy, it looked good, and starting early, you can end up with quite a retirement. THAT IS IF YOU CAN DO IT. When I started my employment to start family, I looked for security and benefits. There were jobs in the 60s. But I also suffered from down sizing and relocation. If I could have scratched out even 1% for 401k, it would be a lot better now, but the money wasn't there. I applaud people that can do it. There were other jobs that paid more, but I was looking further ahead. But for now, pension and SS are fine. "

" How nice Unknown that u get so many kids. We (the dog also dressed up and was a greeter) used to absolutely luv halloweeners when they were wee ones but over the years they grew into mouthy teenagers toting pillowcaes. I am afraid Homey dont play that game. "

" But when in a 401k FG, agreed its scary to open those statements especially with the way things are, but time is on your side. They will bounce back and your rtn will be far greater than if u had played your cards close. Its just food for thought - a bug in your ear. I was same way then went out on a limb so to speak and was absolutely shocked how it can build. Social Security wont be much, if any, when its our time and feel super sorry for the folks that have no one drop of a nestegg. U r also fortunate to own property now because u can tap into that if needed when aged. Had to help my mother in her end years and saw 1st hand what a fixed income is all about. And nursing homes argh... "

" FG: if I can live on 30 per week for groceries for two anyone can. I still make a roast, spag n meatballs, and chicken alfredo. Once a week we have breakfast for dinner-YUM!

it is true as a whole we prefer the quick n easy--but it is also more costly!
and the bagged easy meals are not enough for a larger family, so instead most buy 2 bags.
one roast is 2 meals, pulled pork sandwiches the 2nd night.

its all in how one shops!

Unknown: I do really miss seeing all the kids in costumes! last week I took my daughter to trick or treat street.

the local high school puts it on, with many vendors, giving out freebies, and tons of candy! Its all free except for parking is with donation-which aids the high school. each year a different local supermarket is the main attraction, they bring in a SEMI-truck filled with candy!

one of the high schoolers in costume was pretending to take my grand-daughters bagfull..
she says: gramma, that mans trying to take my trick n treats! lol...

alot of fun-plus alot of coupons for free appetizers to local places and free day of 'whatever' (gym/playzone/instrument lessons/etc.)-

maybe Auburn High should do something like this and get wegmans involved! "

" I'm afraid I'm not big on risks, esp with money, and esp with such volatile times. They had a guy in here at the college a couple years ago pushing people to make riskier investments, but I would not be comfortable putting money in any kind of high risk investment, esp not with the market the way it is. I plan to just keep working until they won't let me any more, esp since I really love my work, and it isn't physically demanding. If it comes to the worst, I already have experience living on nothing, but I just cannot be comfortable with high risk anything. If you can't afford to lose it, don't risk it -- I don't even buy raffle tickets. "

" FG: "I lived hand-to-mouth for the majority of my life"..I am so there also having started working at the tender age of 11! When I was attending college for my 1st degree I had zero to eat - ah t/b that thin again. But I digress. Because of my past I vowed to nvr be broke again and started saving any cent I could. And to Oa, CD's are a good way to start saving if you're at ground zero. My point FG is this - #1 congrats on the 401 and your diligence but #2 and this is gonna sound like an oxymoron, if all u sustained was a $1k loss on your investments, that means at your age you are in funds that are too conservative. In your 40's you should still be heavily invested in high risk funds. U will start to end that trend about 5-10 yrs prior to your retirement moving to the more conservative ones. Its hard to get financial advise out there w/o paying a fee, etc but perhaps the bank u belong to has a financial advisor on staff that can assist you in setting up your future. I can say now in my late 40's we r on right track and doing very well having scrounged all we could and working our fingers to the bone sometimes 7 days a week and up to 16 hrs per day. But it was the FA at the bank that truly helped get all this grit into perspective. I always said regardless of how wealthy we became, will still clip coupons and bend down to pick p that penny on the ground - old habits are hard to break....
