SPRINGPORT - State police say a 40-year-old man died when he was caught in a corn-picking machine in Springport.
The farmworker was identified as Allan Hares of Ridgway Street, Union Springs.
Police say Hares was killed when he became caught in a corn-picking machine he was oiling at the Thomas Smith farm in Springport Friday afternoon. State police investigator Joel Pinker says the death is considered accidental.
Pinker says Hares either fell or was pulled into the machine, perhaps when his clothing was snagged.
According to the National Safety Council, agricultural workers have a greater chance of dying in accidents at work, even when compared with other dangerous occupations like mining and construction.
Two weeks ago, an Auburn teenager was injured when a tractor he was operating overturned in Skaneateles.
