The town of Sennett highway superintendent has been arrested on charges he stole from the municipality and filed fraudulent paperwork in an effort to cover it up.
The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office said it arrested James F. Smith, 58, of 3862 Center Street Road, and charged him with one felony count of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing and two counts of petit larceny.
The sheriff's office said the town bookkeeper discovered inconsistencies in some financial matters Smith was involved with, which led to town Supervisor David Sikora requesting a sheriff's office investigation.
At this point, the sheriff's office said, Smith is accused of taking $565 in town funds for personal use. The investigation continues, however.
Highway superintendent is an elected position in Sennett. It was not immediately clear how the town is responding to the arrest.
Smith was charged Thursday, and issued an appearance ticket for town of Brutus court at 7 p.m. Nov. 18.
The sheriff's office asks anyone with information to call Lt. Joseph Weeks at 253-3902.
