SPRINGPORT - State police say a 40-year-old man died when he was caught in a corn-picking machine at a farm.
The farmworker was identified as Allan Hares of Union Springs.

Police say Hares was killed when he became caught in a corn-picking machine he was oiling at the Thomas Smith farm in Springport Friday afternoon. State police investigator Joel Pinker says the death is considered accidental.

Pinker says Hares either fell or was pulled into the machine, perhaps when his clothing was snagged.

" a better headline would have not used the word "farmhand", "farmworker" would have been better. Mr. Hares was a man first, worker second, God rest his soul and please everyone pray for his family. Farming is one of the top two or three most dangerous occupations. "

" Let the newspaper do it's job and focus your frustration on the bereaved and the victim, not the media. My prayers go out to the family. "

" First, my deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Allan’s family and friends during this very difficult time. Second to the editor of this article along with any people who reviewed it...do you really feel it necessary to go into such detail about a horrific death? You could have left it simply said that he became caught in a corn picking machine. You should respect family and friends of this hard working person and avoid such graphic detailing. "
