Youngsters learn hygiene, safety

Fall has been a busy time at Neighborhood House.
Our 94 readers were part of the more than 425,000 people who broke the world record in the “Read for the Record” event held Oct. 2. We welcomed members of the Auburn Fire Department during Fire Safety Month. We have held our fall festival (a fun week of learning activities rather than a sugary and scary one-day Halloween celebration) and had our fall training day Oct. 13.

Fifteen of our staff members attended the Seanna Donley Growing Together Conference at Cayuga Community College Oct. 19. This high quality training event is organized by Success by 6.

Fall is also United Way campaign time, and I am just one of the many volunteers who has made presentations on behalf of this year's effort. I thank the workplaces who have welcomed us as part of an employee presentation or the Small Business Blitz. The cause is near to my heart, and I am proud to report that Neighborhood House has more than 100 percent participation in our own campaign this year. We are proud to be campaign donors as well as a recipient agency.

Many of the 23 United Way agencies have a direct connection with our work here at Neighborhood House. Just this month, the American Red Cross sent three instructors to our fall staff training day to teach First Aid and CPR training and VISTA worker Teresa Harmon to lead a hand washing class for 3- and 4-year-olds. CHAD and SAVAR (a program of Cayuga Counseling Services) send reps each year to lead sessions for our children on personal safety and making healthy choices.

Options for Independence provides the great “Kids on the Block” puppet show to help children develop an appreciation and awareness for different kinds of disabilities.

Also, some of our children receive needed services through the Gavras Center. The Gavras Center also provides the administrative support for Success by 6, an initiative with the goal for all children in Cayuga County to enter school prepared to succeed.

We participate in the Reading Rally every year sponsored by Literacy Volunteers, and have provided a convenient neighborhood location for a literacy teacher to meet her client.

The Child Care Council provides resource and referral services to parents and training for child care providers.

As children age out of our program, many of them participate in great activities sponsored by the Booker T. Washington Center, the YMCA, Freedom Rec and Boy and Girl Scouts.

Even if our children do not benefit directly from services provided by United Way agencies, it is likely that members of their families do. Such organizations as Hospice, Catholic Charities, Unity House, Seneca Cayuga ARC, the Salvation Army and Aurora run programs that benefit many members of our community.

The SCAT Van provides a way for elderly or disabled members of our community to access needed services or medical appointments.

All of these agencies are supported by the United Way of Cayuga County, so a gift to the United Way supports all of this good work that benefits so many people in our community.
