The Moravia Central School District Board of Education is in the early stages of replacing superintendent William Tammaro, who resigned last week.
Upon accepting Tammaro's resignation last Wednesday, the board appointed Cayuga-Onondaga Board of Cooperative Educational Services Superintendent Bill Speck to coordinate search efforts.
Speck will help the district advertise the vacancy in various media publications and at colleges and universities across New York and the northeast.
Ideally, he would like to receive applications before Christmas and review them in the early weeks of January, with interviews in late January and early February with the board conducting final interviews in early March.
If all goes as planned, he forecasts an offer and appointment in late March with a start date of July 1, 2009.
“I think we're in good shape,” he said. “We're starting the process in a very thoughtful matter. I've had several meetings that have been very fruitful with the board to date.”
After leading the district for nearly nine years, Tammaro is taking a position at the Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES effective Jan. 5. His last day with Moravia will be Jan. 3.
Board President Laura Wells said the board has only had preliminary talks in executive session over who will assume the position of interim superintendent and expects additional information to be available next month.
“I feel that Bill is happy with his decision and he's furthering his career, which I think is wonderful for him,” she said. “I wish him well in his new pursuit.”
Much literature has been written about recent difficulties in recruiting school superintendents, but Speck doesn't believe that will hinder his and Moravia's efforts.
“Moravia is a good school district to be looking for a superintendent,” he said. “There are many positive things happening there and it has a pretty strong commitment to children and the community, so I think that's great for us.
“There's no doubt the applicant pool has gotten smaller,” he added, “but all you need is one that is going to be the best for the district.”
