Halloween remains a fun holiday

By I think this fall there is a contest going on among the trees as to which one can produce the best fall colors. It is beautiful to look at the trees.

One will have light red leaves and next to it will be one with bright yellow. Then there will be one with every leaf a bright orange. A little farther down, you'll see one with half green and half pale yellow. And then there are some that are all green, and not a pine tree, but one with regular long leaves. Maybe they don't want to be in the center. Well to me, they are all winners.
I really enjoy how beautiful a ride becomes with all these colors. Too bad they have to fall off and start over in the spring.

Wouldn't it be nice if they stayed on the trees and gradually returned to spring and summer colors? I can dream can't I?

The ducks and geese on their way south stopped for a couple of days to swim and play down at the lake. The weather was beautiful, so they decided to stop and enjoy it on their trip south. They act like they are tourists in no hurry to get to their destination so they can enjoy the scenery.

Halloween is almost here. That was always a fun holiday for me even after I was an adult. When I had my restaurant, we always wore costumes on that day. The waitresses loved it and so did the customers. That's because my dad let us dress up when he had his restaurant. I used to go to Halloween parties whenever I could. My friend and I used to throw together whatever we could for a party. One year, I went as Mae West. Of course that's when people knew who Mae West was. Yes, I won a prize.

One year after I had left Springside, I wore one of the uniforms with the hat that Springside was known for.

Once we got used to wearing a long dress and hat to wait on people, we loved it because customers always commented on how they thought it was a great idea.

The only thing about it which we didn't like were the black oxford shoes with a cuban heel we wore. After a few hours of walking in them, your feet weren't happy. I had a solution and the dress made it possible. When my feet hurt, I would put on sneakers and the dress was long enough to hide most of it.

A few years ago, a woman came up to me in the grocery store and said “I have a picture of you in my wedding album cutting my wedding cake and you had sneakers on.” Guess you never really know who notices what.

Well, November is about here with daylight-saving time ending. Not my favorite thing at all. The more light there is, the more I like it.

Then we have Election Day (no comment), Veterans Day, a nice tribute and of course Thanksgiving, and that is a really good one.

There were a lot of events over the weekend. That is such a great idea to give people so many choices.

I hope everyone is well for all these days, and let's all concentrate on no snow yet.

My ethnic recipe this week is Irish and my other recipe is for sailor style cod.

Today's blooper:

This blooper is another funny one.

We were at a ladies luncheon. Sometimes for variety we pack a lunch of sandwiches, salads, fruit, desserts and when we arrive at the meeting we place the box on the table. Then the boxes are numbered. When it's time to eat, we pick a number from a box full of numbers and then the box with the same number is your lunch. It's fun because everyone makes great sandwiches, etc.

One friend who was sitting across from me whispered, “all I got for a sandwich was two slices of break with nothing on them.” I said, “Let's find out who made it.” She replied, “No, no ... I don't want to embarrass anyone.”

Since we're all seniors, we kind of assumed whoever made it might have forgotten to finishing the sandwich and just packed the bread. I offered her half of my sandwich, and she said, “No. I'll just eat the salad, fruit and dessert.

She opened a container and there was egg and olive in it. At the same time the women who had made the lunch came over and said, “I put the filling for the sandwich in a container so the bread wouldn't get soggy by the time we ate. Just spread it on.” We both commented, “Oh, how clever.”

We all had a good laugh about it.
