No wonder Cayuga County doesn't have any money --- $25,000 to help pay for a feasibility study to determine that the theater festival would be a positive addition. My goodness, don't we have something more important around here we could do with $25,000?
I wasn't too sure about Mr. Palesh at first, but I think it was smart to give him an extension. He seems to be a lot more brighter than the council people, the mayor and everybody else.
Question: How can a person be protected from unwanted medical care?
I think all the Obama followers are in for a big surprise come Nov. 4. The silent majority are going to put Senator McCain in office by a wide margin.

I became the opposite, I have taken my kids on vacation every year. I have supplied them with more than their needs. I have taken in and supported so many family members.

karl again... wrote on Oct 30, 2008 5:12 PM:
When you release an album, it takes two years to see any royalties at all. IF your song that YOU wrote is played on the radio, 50% right off the top goes to the Publishing company. The other co-writer gets their 50% of your 50% then. SO you're left with 25%. Then you have to have a record company promoting your song and album in order to get airplay (Big Radio does NOT play songs because they "like the songs"--ditto that for MTV), and they take their cut, It's an endless cutting and dividing, until you wind up with about 8% or less of the profit, It SUCKS.
After your song falls out of rotation in airplay, the profits pretty much dry up. And "niche" bands pretty much sell most of the CD's that they will sell for the most part within the first two years or so of the CD's release, and then that slows down too. Then you have people copying, stealing music--and more sales go out the window. Not an easy business lately.
Record companies USED TO make investments in artists. Spend to promote, to build a band's future. Under today's way, bands like AC/DC, KISS, Led Zeppelin would NEVER have become legends, because they ALL took at least 2-3 less-than-best-selling albums to "break".
For about 10 years now, the record companies now have been just raping the profits from Artists. They used to report profits yearly, so you had a whole good year to put out a single, and another, and build a "brand name" by touring to sell yourself and build up a following.
A band had a bit of time to play "in the red' and try to build a loyal following and recoup their "advance" debt.
But then, the Industry fired all the people who really cared about promoting and building Music as an investment, and hired a bunch pf young accountants who changed the profit reporting to QUARTERLY. Now, if your FIRST SINGLE doesn't go "Gold" at least, you're just out of luck. "See ya!"
That's why we have bands releasing CD's with only one good song on it, and the rest of the CD sucks. Because the record companies aren't interested in building up a band as an investment, to reap profit long-term. They just find a pretty young band/artist, have a professional songwriter in their "fold" wrote a song with the band, and since the band/artist is just so desperate for their "one shot at stardom", they sign a contract with a very low return and a very short option-to-renew, meaning if they don't "go huge" immediately within the first quarter of their release, they're unceremoniously dropped--and the record companies and publishers reap all the profits for the songs' duration.
"American Idol" anyone?
It's all about G-R-E-E-D anymore--sign a bunch of "Noobs", promise them the moon, spend as little cash as possible, take whatever profit you can,and then write 'em off as a business loss because you have failed to promote or build them as a viable artist. It ALWAYS works in the record companies' favor--which is why we started our own to manage our own affairs, and have the control we wanted--which has been a HUGE undertaking, and with this economy....not as easy as it might have been... Let me ask you this, Chris. Your parents raise you, care for you, contribute to your living and well-being until you become self-sufficient.
Do you ever pay them back? Or when they lack the ability to contribute to the house--by doing the lawn, cooking, whatever--would you just throw them in the ol' retirement home because they're a "burden"? What happens if they can't pay their taxes on their property because their retirement accounts or stocks have been wiped out by your Wall Street buddies? Would ya just kick 'em out on the street and tell them "Hey! You shoulda planned better!"?
See, that's what this is about. A fundamental difference in the way that we perceive what is "community". You seem like you are a "community-unto-yourself"! "

I have been with TIAA-CREF now for just a few years. My first year at Ithaca College, I had to join some other plan, as they don't let you join the one where the college chips in until you have first been in one where only you contribute for one year. That means, I only was able to put in small amounts my first year, and a bit larger plus matching the past 3+ years. All together I have about $27,000 -- which wouldn't last ONE year at this point, but it's more than I ever had.
I know zippo about investing -- when you don't have enough for your daily bread, you don't much concern yourself about investments, for chr*st's sake. I put in under the most conservative plan, whatever that means, and it is all a mystery to me, except that I know I am not a gambler or risk taker when it comes to money. You get that way if you don't have it to spare and have any common sense.
I do take a look at the quarterly report, and I saw that I had lost a chunk this last period. The overall amount had gone frmo $26,000-something to $27,000-something, but the college and I had put in a good deal more than $1,000.
The way I see it, there's not much I can do about it except leave the money and wait things out. If I lose it all, in some ways it is like magic money I never really had anyway.
But for people who are trying to live on their retirement, it can be a disaster. For people with no retirement, it's no easier, as whatever modicum of (unreliable) safety net there was before just got diminished even more.
But don't go getting snorky with people who haven't got enough to put some aside for retirement, or who don't trust the bloody system to protect their money -- if that's the case, looks like they were right. "

Over the last three years, Exxon Mobil has paid an average of $27 billion annually in taxes. That's $27,000,000,000 per year, a number so large it's hard to comprehend. Here's one way to put Exxon's taxes into perspective.
According to IRS data for 2004, the most recent year available:
Total number of tax returns: 130 million
Number of Tax Returns for the Bottom 50%: 65 million
Adjusted Gross Income for the Bottom 50%: $922 billion
Total Income Tax Paid by the Bottom 50%: $27.4 billion
Conclusion: In other words, just one corporation (Exxon Mobil) pays as much in taxes ($27 billion) annually as the entire bottom 50% of individual taxpayers paid in 2004 (most recent year available), which is 65,000,000 people! Further, the tax rate for the bottom 50% was only 3% of adjusted gross income ($27.4 billion / $922 billion) in 2004, and the tax rate for Exxon was 41% in 2006 ($67.4 billion in taxable income, $27.9 billion in taxes). By James Bone, Rob Crilly and Ben Macintyre, The Times of London
Barack Obama has lived one version of the American dream that has taken him to the steps of the White House. But a few miles from where the Democratic presidential candidate studied at Harvard, his Kenyan aunt and uncle, immigrants living in modest circumstances in Boston, have a contrasting American story.
Zeituni Onyango, the aunt so affectionately described in Obama's best-selling memoir "Dreams fFrom My Father," lives in a disabled-access flat on a rundown public housing estate in South Boston.
A second relative believed to be the long-lost "Uncle Omar" described in the book was beaten by armed robbers with a "sawed-off rifle" while working in a corner shop in the Dorchester area of the city. He was later evicted from his one-bedroom apartment for failing to pay $2,324.20 in bills, according to the Boston Housing Court.
The press has repeatedly rehearsed Obama's extraordinary odyssey, but the other side of the family's American experience has only been revealed in parts. Just across town from where Obama made history as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review, some of his closest blood relatives have confronted the harshness of immigrant life in America.
In his book Obama writes that "Uncle Omar" had gone missing after moving to Boston in the 1960s a quarter-century before Obama first visited his family in Kenya. Aunt Zeituni is now also living in Boston, and recently made a $260 campaign contribution to her nephew's presidential bid from a work address in the city.
Speaking outside her home in Flaherty Way, South Boston, on Tuesday, Onyango, 56, confirmed she was the "Auntie Zeituni" in Obama's memoir. She declined to answer most other questions about her relationship with the presidential contender until after the November 4 election.
"I can't talk about it, I just pray for him, that's all," she said, adding: "After the 4th, I can talk to anyone." "

Firstly, you have no idea what I make a year as an applications engineer so you can save your snide remarks.
Me and my business partner are trying to grow a small company and we plan on making more than the 250K each (or is it 200 or 150 or 100? BO isn't sure what the cut off for "rich" is). We are actually seeking to do this in another country that is much more business friendly with reasonable taxes (Costa Rica).
From the Al Gore (tm) interwebs:
CHANGES IN THE WORKPLACE
You small business owners out there are preparing for life under a Barack Obama presidency. One of our listeners sent us some new rules for small businesses based on Obama's ideals of change and fairness:
As of November 5, 2008, when President Obama officially becomes president-elect, our company will instill a few new policies which are in keeping with his new, inspiring issues of change and fairness:
1. All salespeople will be pooling their sales and bonuses into a common pool that will be divided equally between all of you. This will serve to give those of you who are under-achieving a "fair shake".
2. All low level workers will be pooling their wages, including overtime, into a common pool, dividing it equally amongst you. This will help those who are "too busy for overtime" to reap the rewards from those who have more spare time and can work extra hours.
3. All top management will now be referred to as "the government." We will not participate in this "pooling" experience because the law doesn't apply to us.
4. The "government" will give eloquent speeches to all employees every week, encouraging its workers to continue to work hard "for the good of all".
5. The employees will be thrilled with these new policies because it's "good to spread the wealth around". Those of you who have underachieved will finally get an opportunity; those of you who have worked hard and had success will feel more "patriotic".
6. The last few people who were hired should clean out their desks. Don't feel bad, though, because President Obama will give you free healthcare, free handouts, free oil for heating your home, free food stamps, and he'll let you stay in your home for as long as you want even if you can't pay your mortgage. If you appeal directly to our democratic congress, you might even get a free flat screen TV and a coupon for free haircuts (shouldn't all Americans be entitled to nice looking hair?)!!!
If for any reason you are not happy with the new policies, you may want to rethink your vote on November 4th. "

The Associated Press takes a look at the details in Obama's prime-time ad
AP
Wednesday, October 29, 2008
WASHINGTON -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was less than upfront in his half-hour commercial Wednesday night about the costs of his programs and the crushing budget pressures he would face in office.
Obama's assertion that "I've offered spending cuts above and beyond" the expense of his promises is accepted only by his partisans. His vow to save money by "eliminating programs that don't work" masks his failure throughout the campaign to specify what those programs are -- beyond the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
A sampling of what voters heard in the ad, and what he didn't tell them:
THE SPIN: "That's why my health care plan includes improving information technology, requires coverage for preventive care and pre-existing conditions and lowers health care costs for the typical family by $2,500 a year."
THE FACTS: His plan does not lower premiums by $2,500, or any set amount. Obama hopes that by spending $50 billion over five years on electronic medical records and by improving access to proven disease management programs, among other steps, consumers will end up saving money. He uses an optimistic analysis to suggest cost reductions in national health care spending could amount to the equivalent of $2,500 for a family of four. Many economists are skeptical those savings can be achieved, but even if they are, it's not a certainty that every dollar would be passed on to consumers in the form of lower premiums.
THE SPIN: "I also believe every American has a right to affordable health care."
THE FACTS: That belief should not be confused with a guarantee of health coverage for all. He makes no such promise. Obama hinted as much in the ad when he said about the problem of the uninsured: "I want to start doing something about it." He would mandate coverage for children but not adults. His program is aimed at making insurance more affordable by offering the choice of government-subsidized coverage similar to that in a plan for federal employees and other steps, including requiring larger employers to share costs of insuring workers.
THE SPIN: "I've offered spending cuts above and beyond their cost."
THE FACTS: Independent analysts say both Obama and Republican John McCain would deepen the deficit. The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates Obama's policy proposals would add a net $428 billion to the deficit over four years -- and that analysis accepts the savings he claims from spending cuts. The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, whose other findings have been quoted approvingly by the Obama campaign, says: "Both John McCain and Barack Obama have proposed tax plans that would substantially increase the national debt over the next 10 years." The analysis goes on to say: "Neither candidate's plan would significantly increase economic growth unless offset by spending cuts or tax increases that the campaigns have not specified."
THE SPIN: "Here's what I'll do. Cut taxes for every working family making less than $200,000 a year. Give businesses a tax credit for every new employee that they hire right here in the U.S. over the next two years and eliminate tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. Help homeowners who are making a good faith effort to pay their mortgages, by freezing foreclosures for 90 days. And just like after 9-11, we'll provide low-cost loans to help small businesses pay their workers and keep their doors open. "
THE FACTS: His proposals -- the tax cuts, the low-cost loans, the $15 billion a year he promises for alternative energy, and more -- cost money, and the country could be facing a record $1 trillion deficit next year. Indeed, Obama recently acknowledged -- although not in his commercial -- that: "The next president will have to scale back his agenda and some of his proposals." "

First, she said that slow metabolism/digestion is NEVER a "good thing". Slow digestion only takes more energy from the body. The longer waste products remain in your system, the more they poison you.
Secondly, in animals which eat meat, like dogs, they have very short digestive tracts, because all they need to do is let the meat protein sit there and rot while the body processes it.
In humans, we have a very long digestive tract, to efficiently extract the nutrients, as in vegetative matter.
Now as far as the "canine teeth"--that's not exactly correct. We have incisors and what seem to be "canine" teeth, but there is actually speculation in some scientific circles now that they are actually an evolutionary adaptation from when we started killing animals. But if you really look at our jaws, our jaws move from side-to-side, like herbivores. And 99% of our teeth are FLAT--like an herbivore! Look at the teeth of dogs--their meat-eating teeth are pointy quite a ways back.
Interesting, huh?

T'was the night before elections
And all through the town
Tempers were flaring
Emotions all up and down!
I, in my bathrobe
With a cat in my lap
Had cut off the TV
Tired of political crap.
When all of a sudden
There arose such a noise
I peered out of my window
Saw Obama and his boys
They had come for my wallet
They wanted my pay
To give to the others
Who had not worked a day!
He snatched up my money
And quick as a wink
Jumped back on his bandwagon
As I gagged from the stink
He then rallied his henchmen
Who were pulling his cart
I could tell they were out
To tear my country apart!
" On Fannie, on Freddie,
On Biden! ! and Ayers!
On Acorn, On Pelosi"
He screamed at the pairs!
They took off for his cause
And as he flew out of sight
I heard him laugh at the nation
Who wouldn't stand up and fight!
So I leave you to think
On this one final note-

GET OUT AND VOTE!!!! "

And the rest of Palin's associates--like her HUSBAND, for one--are also highly questionable people, with unclear motives and agenda's. That Secessionist Society is PROFOUNDLY "Anti-American"! Here's what the founder Joe Vogler said about the USA---
""My government is my worst enemy. I'm going to fight them with any means at hand."
Before his strange murder in 1993, party founder Vogler preached armed insurrection against the United States of America. Vogler, who always carried a Magnum with him, was fond of saying, "When the [federal] bureaucrats come after me, I suggest they wear red coats. They make better targets. In the federal government are the biggest liars in the United States, and I hate them with a passion. They think they own [Alaska]. There comes a time when people will choose to die with honor rather than live with dishonor. That time may be coming here."

The reasons you give are good ones for not eating meat in excess, but there are times when that slower-to-metabolize protein is a good thing and desireable -- a balance in all things. There's also the natural goodness of red meats with iron and so forth. You can pick that stuff up elsewhere if you work hard at it, but you have to (unnaturally, imho) restrict your diet if you cut out meat. On the other hand, if you choose lean, healthy cuts and eat them in coordination with a balanced diet, i.e. you don't overdo the meat, it's what our bodies were made to eat. (No argument that there are a lot of "bad meats" -- i.e. poor quality or full of bad things, like too much fats, blended meats with all kinds of filler, etc) Venison is a terrific meat -- very little fat, and so long as the animal was not sick, it's not packed with steroids and antibiotics which are so common in "store-boughten" meats. Plus the animals lived free, natural lives. (I also believe in humane slaughter, and that includes deer).
If the human body were not made to eat meat, we would not have canine teeth, and our earliest ancestors would not have been hunters long before they were farmers.
I think also of a vegetarian friend-of-a-friend I knew who had such fierce cravings for meat while she was pregnant that she changed her diet during that time -- she knew her body very well and knew well enough to listen to it -- if it was telling her she needed meat to grow a healthy baby, so be it. She went back to vegetarianism after the baby was born, but her body knew what it needed while she was pregnant. My body always wanted avocados as soon as I conceived -- which told me I wasn't getting enough of the very healthy fats and oils in that food to grow a healthy baby inside me without it. I listened to my body too -- and had incredibly healthy boys of 9 lbs 1 oz and 9 lbs 5 oz. -- not fat, just big boys. "

Today on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read "Vote Obama, I need the money." I laughed.
Once in the restaurant my server had on a "Obama 08" tie, again I laughed as he had given away his political preference--just imagine the coincidence.
When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need--the homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight.
I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I 've decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was grateful.
At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient needed money more.
I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application. "

Meat protein is the MOST difficult type of complex protein for our body to digest and assimilate. It's protein which has ALREADY been converted by another digestive system, and ours has to RE-convert and transform it into a usable form. That takes a LOT of energy and time, and allows the meat to basically just rot in our guts--the reason that it takes so long to have a bowel movement after a good steak meal, for instance. Plus, there's all that fat.
Vegetable protein, on the other hand, is PURE, UNCONVERTED protein, which is very quickly and easily assimilated by our bodies. What's more, the protein you get from vegetables is actually BETTER for your body; higher in quality than animal protein. There's 0% fat, and no other questionable waste materials/fillers like in hot dogs, suasages, or other "blended" meats.
My girlfriend is a qualified dietitian, and doing a 4.0 up at Syracuse University for Advanced Nutrition and Pre-Med; she is teaching me about all this stuff, and the more I learn, the less meat I eat. "

Eating a balanced diet of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, calcium-rich dairy, and proteins from lean meat and non-meat sources is healthy and good for you, and it's what nature meant humans to eat. Well, OK, nature meant humans to eat a lot more fish (which I can't even force myself to eat -- I just hate seafood, good for you or not) -- which used to be healthy before we polluted the seas with mercury and other nasty things. Once again, it's not the food per se which is not good for you -- it's what man has done to damage our own food supply, and that affects veggies as well as meat.
Take soybeans -- they are grown all around this area -- on fields thickly spread with liquid manure. If they were using moderate amounts of fresh manure from happy, healthy animals raised in clean, unmedicated conditions, manure would be the perfect natural fertilizer. But that's not the case, and it should concern vegetarians and meat-eaters alike.
I know for sure of two farms in this area which are spreading human waste on their fields as well -- and I am sure there are more about which I don't know. Think of all those recent articles about the pharmaceuticals, diseases and other bad things found in urban water supplies -- it's the same source, i.e. everything that gets flushed or washed down a drain in our homes and businesses is now in our water AND our soil.
Let vegetarians eat whatever they want to eat, I have no problem with that -- but I do resent it when it gets constantly shoved in our faces as if it were healthier -- it's not. The human body was made to eat healthy, wholesome animal proteins in moderate amounts. If people eat too much meat out of balance with the rest of their diets, that is their fault and not very smart, and can lead to the diseases discussed above. If the meat available to consumers is not healthy and wholesome, it's not the fault of the meat, but of the producers, and the bad things in it can lead to the diseases discussed above. But in neither case is it the problem due to eating meat per se. "

You feel that there were so many black people voting (who don't usually vote) that McCain does not stand a chance to win, and that "this" is a shame for America.
Do you mean that you think it is a shame McCain won't win on account of the large numbers of usually inactive black voters? Or are you saying that it is a shame more blacks don't vote regularly?
