Maroons finish with third straight win

Manny Brooks powered the Auburn football team to a 39-0 abbreviated win over Uitca Proctor on Tuesday.
In a shortened game due to blizzard-like conditions at Nottingham High School, Brooks rushed for three of the Maroons' touchdowns off of 14 carries for 143 yards before the game was called at the half.

“We knew we had to control the ball,” Auburn head coach Dave Moskov said. “It's a great way to send our seniors out.”

Prior to the game, the Maroons knew with the strong winds, that the passing game wouldn't be much of a factor.

“We went out and during warm-ups,” Moskov said. “The wind was carrying the ball five feet in the air.”

Auburn only attempted one pass in the game, while Brooks and JT Foltz led the way on the ground. Foltz also scored three times off of nine carries for 66 yards.

Auburn's defense held the Raiders to negative yardage.

“They are a very pass-orientated offense,” Moskov said. “They probably led Section III in pass attempts on the year. So with the wind conditions, we were able to limit the pass. That allowed us to just be able to focus on the run.”

They did just that as Bill Scala led the Maroons' defense with eight tackles, while the unit recovered three fumbles and an onside kick. Scala, Brendan O'Connor and Foltz each had a fumble recovery.

The Maroons (3-6) ended their season on a three game winning streak. After an inconsistent start, Auburn was able to battle back and build momentum on for next season.

“The 10 month off-season program will start,” Moskov said. “But the kids are excited. They know how close they are and what they can do. We just need to get bigger and strong. The staff and kids are excited.”

That excitement was evident on the field as well, as Auburn outscored opponents (Central Square, Fayetteville-Manlius and Utica Proctor) 126 - 37 during their late season run.

“It puts our season in contrast,” Moskov said. “We knew we had a good team, but just couldn't get the wins. We felt that once we got to the end of the season, it clicked.”
