The weather was a bit more pleasant, but it didn’t seem to matter.
Christian Brothers Academy shut out the Auburn girls soccer team in a 2-0 victory in a Section III, Class AA quarterfinal game, Monday at Nottingham High School.

The Maroons and Brothers started play on Saturday at CBA High School but the field soon became unplayable and the game was postponed. From what they saw in that short time frame, the Maroons knew they would be in for a fight.

“We knew it would be tough, especially after we got a look at them,” Auburn head coach Tom Quest said. “Just playing them for about 15 minutes showed us that they were a very talented team.”

The Maroons’ Marissa Rescott and the rest of the defense managed to prevent some damage, but not enough.

“Our defense played extremely well,” Quest said. “Sarah Green, Marissa Slayton, Emily Kukella and (Rescott) all did great. We just couldn’t get the ball in.”

The Brothers also led Auburn in shots on goal, 14-7 and in corner kicks, 8-1. Virginia Porten paced the Maroons, collecting 12 saves.

The shutout ends the Maroons’ season at 9-9-1.

“Our main goal this season was to make it to the sectional tournament and go as far as we could,” Quest said. “I am happy with our progress throughout the season. The girls never gave up. They played extremely hard today and they played hard until the last buzzer went off. We were just outmatched by a very strong team.”
