Ethan Holt has rushed the Cato-Meridian football into the Section III, Class C West playoffs against undefeated No. 2 Westmoreland at 2 p.m., Saturday.
The Blue Devils are riding Holt into a six-game winning streak in which they have also scored 42 or more points per game in four of those games.
“We have a very talented offense,” Blue Devils Coach C.J. Hannon said. “But that starts up front and Dillon Caswell and Preston Dennison have done their jobs.”
The Blue Devils haven't won a sectional game since 1995, but did make the trip into play last year.
Their confidence has been flying high as they carry the six-game winning streak since dropping their opener against defending state champion Bishop Ludden.
“That streak is so helpful,” Hannon said. “I know our players are excited about the opportunity.”
The Bulldogs have a universal offense. They have the ability to run and pass, while also running their share of options. They are also coming off a close 23-20 win over then-undefeated Cazenovia.
“We need to be ready,” Hannon said. “They have a number of good running backs and they can also air it out pretty well.”
Holt can expect more of the usual. They also have Nick LaLone and A.J. Rothernburg on offense.
He will see the same amount of carries, but Cato-Meridian will do what it takes for success.
“We are just going to try to find the end zone,” Hannon said. “Whether it comes from Ethan or not. We just need to put it in the end zone.”
Something the Blue Devils have had success with in their streak, while Holt has surpassed the 1,000 yard plateau and scoring points like it's nothing unusual.
“Our offensive line has been carrying the stick the past few games,” Hannon said.
“Ethan has been key in those games, but it starts up front.”
Despite the success on offense Hannon and the Blue Devils know it has to come on the defense also.
“We need to be well on both sides,” Hannon said. “That's needed when you play against a good team like Westmoreland.”
Their defensive game plan is quite simple.
“We need to get off the blocks and make tackles,” Hannon said.
The Bulldogs have averaged 27 points per game and only have allowed 9.8 points against them.
The Blue Devils, on the other hand, have outscored them with 38 points per game and held opposing offenses to 22 points per game.
They will need a top notch offensive performance along with a strong defense to pull an upset Saturday.
