Letters to the Editor

  • Conservatives would rather breed fear than lose
With recent opinion polls showing Barack Obama extending his lead over John McCain, the conservative base of the Republican Party has apparently shifted into desperation mode. Spurred on by the conservative media's intensified use of vitriol, propaganda and fear-mongering, rank-and-file Republicans are now imploring their candidates to use every available tool at their disposal to defeat the Democrats in November. Angry crowds demand mud-slinging, and jeer McCain when he reminds them that Obama is a good and decent citizen, just one whose views McCain opposes. Attendants at rallies for the McCain-Palin ticket now express fear, hatred and prejudice toward Obama, and some in the crowd are even threatening violence against the Democratic nominee. As desperate as they were in 2004, and as frustrated as they were with their candidate's reluctance to fight back that year, the rank-and-file Democrats did not sink to this level.
