Women focus on health

AUBURN - In order to take care of other people, women must first learn to take care of themselves.
Learning how to balance daily responsibilities while still having enough time to focus on one's own needs was the topic of Carrie Lazarus' keynote address at the 11th annual Women's Health Institute Saturday.

“When you want to be the best wife, mother, sister and daughter, you have to say yes to yourself” even if it means saying no to somebody else, Lazarus said.

The event gave women a chance to meet one-on-one with practitioners and a forum to talk to doctors in a non-office setting, said Roz McCormick, chief operating officer of Auburn Memorial Hospital. McCormick said that the hospital chose Lazarus, a news anchor for WSYR in Syracuse, as the keynote speaker because she is someone the attendees could easily relate to, she said.

Karen Steigerwald has been attending the Women's Health Institute seminars for the past six to seven years, she said. Steigerwald comes with her mother, Elizabeth Mullally.

“Each time we come, we learn something new,” Steigerwald said. “We've always had a wonderful experience.”

Steigerwald and Mullally, both of Auburn, attended the Women and Heart Disease workshop in addition to two other ones Saturday. This issue was important, Steigerwald said, because Steigerwald's husband and Mullally both have heart issues.

“It's always good to educate myself,” Steigerwald said.

Some of the other workshops available during Saturday's seminar included Advances in Total Knee Arthroplasty, Music in Health and Healing, Smoking Cessation and Time is Brain: Recognizing the Crucial Signs of Stroke Onset. Participants attended a total of three 45-minute sessions. Each session had three or four options for women to choose from.

Nearly 200 people registered for the health institute, said Beverly Miller, director of community relations for AMH.

“It's more exciting this year because the hospital is making so many strides in women's health,” Miller said.

Helen Noz, of Auburn, attended the seminar for the first time this year. The workshops were very informative, she said.

“I think it's wonderful that the hospital sponsors this,” Noz said. “To have something like this is very nice and it's well-received.”

Sometimes, patients don't have enough time to ask all the questions when they are at the doctor's office, she said. This event gives them an additional opportunity to do so.

Lazarus agreed to be the keynote speaker because she supports the program, she said.

“They (AMH) have hit all the issues that are important to women's health here in one conference,” Lazarus said. “I hope I helped set the tone for the day.”

Lazarus has hosted a segment called Family Healthcast for 17 to 18 years, she said. It was one of the first in the nation. Lazarus believes that four things women can do to help themselves is to move more, eat well, make time for themselves and make time for girlfriends, she said.

“Make yourself a priority,” she said.
