CENTRAL SQUARE #— With two winless football teams taking the field behind Paul V. Moore High School in Central Square on Friday night, it was hard to tell there wasn’t much at stake. No playoff seedings, no home field advantage — just the chance to conclude the regular season with a victory.
Tell that to Auburn.
Central Square came out of the gates fired up on what was the Redhawks’ senior night, but it was the Maroons that played like a team that was 6-0 instead of 0-6. With a rusher and a receiver each piling up more than 100 yards, Auburn rolled to a 46-23 win.
“Everything was working for us,” Auburn head coach Dave Moskov said. “And that’s a credit to these guys out here. All year, we’ve been right there, we’re a very good football team; anyone that knows football knows that. It’s just one of those years — sometimes you win just enough to get you in the playoffs and this year, we just lost enough. We felt like if we got up early in this game, it would give us enough momentum to pull this win off.”
The Maroons broke out into the school’s fight song in the postgame huddle, and they had every reason to sing. Auburn didn’t turn the ball over once, but took it away from the Redhawks four times.
JT Foltz had his own breakout night, galloping for 133 yards on 13 carries — 91 of his yards came in the first half. He also had a fumble recovery in the second half.
Central Square keyed in on speedy Manny Brooks, containing him to 90 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns. The Redhawks couldn’t find an answer for Malcolm Bryant, however, when he seemed to burn them on every pass that was thrown his way. He scored from 39, 88 and 17 yards on the night, capping off his regular season finale in an Auburn uniform in style.
“We can’t believe this, we thought it’d be a high-scoring game,” Bryant said. “Especially when we scored the first touchdown and they came right back, but we came back and won. They didn’t have a safety back there, so we thought we could out run them and obviously, we put our moves in with some play action.”
Dave Jacobs played a flawless game behind center, completing 7-of-12 for 193 yards and three touchdowns. Bryant’s speed helped immensely in Jacobs’ success, catching five of those passes for 172 yards and the three touchdowns.
“All year, he’s just developed into something really special,” Moskov said of Bryant. “It’s hard to be on this field and I think he understands the sacrifices he has had to make to get here and it shows up every game.”
Defensively, the Maroons held the Redhawks to right about where they’ve been all season. Averaging 20 points a contest, Central Square couldn’t get much going in the passing game. Shawn Muller and Nick Moran combined to throw just 3-for-16 for 19 yards.
The Maroons trailed for just 3:49 in the game. Brooks capped off Auburn’s opening drive — 65 yards and 4:06 — with a 5-yard score. A two-point conversion pass failed, which gave Central Square the opportunity to take the lead nearly two minutes later on a Muller 56-yard run and a John Denslow extra point kick.
The Redhawks advantage was lost when Foltz scored from 3-yards out with 2:31 left in the first quarter. Brooks gave the Maroons a seven-point lead when he scored on a two-point conversion run. A lead that Auburn wouldn’t even come close to relinquishing.
In garbage time late in the game, Central Square’s Jason Lenchert grabbed a two-yard score from Muller with 3:47 left in the game to seal the final score.
“This feels amazing, actually,” Bryant said. “Getting our first win all season. It’s awesome.”
