We should honor not only the fallen but all military

I was absolutely moved by the story of Sgt. Jerome Bell's funeral. It certainly was wonderful to see how our community turned out to honor one of our nation's fallen heroes!
However, I have one concern. I really wish that we would in some small way honor those who serve our country and are still alive. Yes, we paid tribute to the National Guard when they returned home in October of 2007, but there were many more who returned home, who were attached to other units in the U.S. They served their country in Iraq also and returned home to no recognition whatsoever.

Why can't The Citizen have a small area to honor them on a regular basis? Just to say thank you?

" Who's "dogging?" What do you mean "over and over?" I find this interesting, seeing as I haven't seen ANY public outcry to support the troops in at least 2-3 years... And I ought to know- I'm a parachute infantryman. Over the past 4 years, though, I've noticed something. Everywhere I go, whether it's home on leave, or on the way to deployments in Iraq and Asia, Americans actually have to be TOLD to clap... TOLD to support us when we walk through the airport. Otherwise, they prefer to ignore us, pretend we dont exist. Makes us start to think you don't care. When was the last time you shook a Soldier's hand? Or even any of the folks you mentioned in your little tirade? Personnally, I think that just smacks of armchair cheerleading- you aren't even at the game. As far as fully appreciating me and the sacrifices that my Brothers and I have made- until you've done it, until you've been there, you CAN'T fully appreciate that. So until the day you spend 15 months in a combat zone away from everything you love, repack your best friends intestines and/or give a direct blood transfusion to a man who isnt coagulating on the op table... never claim that you "fully appreciate." Food for thought. And I don't think that a small section in the paper with little else of import ever written in it isn't too much to ask. "

" Amy, check out the Veterans Field of Honor at the Seneca Lake State Park just east of Geneva on routes 5&20 November 7-12, 2008. Its a very impressive honor to all the men and women who have served their country. For more information call (315)539-8542 "

" I fully appreciate our troops and honor their sacrifices, but I get tired of people like you that keep dogging us to respect and honor the troops over and over and over again. I respect and honor emergency medical workers, nurses, teachers, police officers, firemen and all persons that serve the public. They are in occupations that they have chosen for their own personal reasons, but I do not need you and others like you daily telling us to honor the troops. Give your repect but do it quietly without preaching to me relentlessly. "
