The Southern Cayuga Central School District this week took one step toward devising a long range education plan.
The board of education Tuesday unanimously appointed a 20-member Long Range Education Planning Committee comprising board members, administrators, teachers, support staff and community members, to use data to identify district priorities and ultimately improve student achievement, Superintendent Mary Kay Worth said.
“Our goal is to implement a planning process that will dynamically guide the district and each building on the rich path to improving student achievement,” she said.
During the committee's first meeting - a full day meeting - on Wednesday, members discerned 10 performance measures “to gauge and assess the things that are most important to SCCS,” Worth wrote in an e-mail.
These measures include: literacy, mathematics, graduation rates, drop out rates, enrollment in Advanced Placement or college credit bearing courses, participation in co-curricular activities and participating in elective Arts.
These measures were discerned by Sean Brady, owner of Prism Decision Systems hired by the district last summer to facilitate the long range education planning, using data from the state report card.
From there, committee members prioritized the performance indicators using individual keypads designed to ensure that everyone's opinion was counted.
Worth categorized the meeting a success “because the work was focused and productive, people were engaged, the time flew by for people even after a full day's work,” she said. “There wasn't a person in there that didn't feel they were heard and contributed and couldn't see the value of the process.”
The committee will meet again for a second full-day meeting on Nov. 17 and for an evening session Nov. 19. Following the last meeting, a presentation will be made to the board likely on Nov. 24, or during a board meeting in December, Worth said.
The education planning is just one piece of the long term planning process, which will also include devising a long range facilities plan.
