AUBURN - The Auburn girls soccer team defense is as good as it gets, but the offense is also as inconsistent as it gets.

Auburn player Katie Tonzi eyes a ball headed toward the edge of the field near Cicero-North Syracuse's goal as teammate Jennifer Fox backs her up at a game in Auburn Thursday.
The Maroons fell 2-0 to Cicero-North Syracuse at Holland Stadium on their Senior Night, Thursday.
Though the Maroons defense was as steady as a wall, with just over 11 minutes left in the game, the Northstars' Taylor D'Alfonso stuck first.
“She is an extremely gifted player,” Maroons coach Tom Quest said.
Her goal came on a miscommunication by the Maroons defense.
“It caught us off guard,” Quest said.
“They played extremely well on both sides of the ball. We just didn't convert on a few opportunities
D'Alfonso would attack again for the Northstars shortly to officially decrease the Maroons chances of pulling out their second-straight win. “We had a couple of opportunities,” Quest said.
“We built the wall and thought we had someone back there. It just wasn't our night. We didn't execute at all.”
The Maroons had nine shots and one corner kick compared to the Northstars' 16 shots with three corner kicks.
Chelsea Dunay saved six shots and Virginia Porten saved 16.
“Virginia made some excellent saves,” Quest said. “She is an excellent keeper. We will really miss her, but I feel safe with Aubrey Campbell. She's a junior and has been here for a while, but she will have some big shoes to fill.”
Auburn tried to jump start its offense with five minutes left on a Marissa Slayton set play, but the Dunay saved the shot.
Slayton would try one more time just over two minutes, but the shot was too high.
“We talked about the ability to finish before the game,” Quest said. “We need to run a few more combination plays in practice.”
The Maroons (8-7-1) begin preparation for their season finale in Cortland, Saturday. The Purple Tigers defeated the Maroons 1-0 earlier this month.
“We need to put people in position to score,” Quest said. “We tried that today, but wasn't able to. We alternated 3-4 girls on top and two forwards to give us a strong midfield. However when you take away a midfielder it's also tough to defend. So we will work on that in practice.”
Auburn would also like to go strong on its attack to the net.
Another key scenario they will attack during practice will be striking toward the net.
Auburn could use a little fire offensively, while the defense is doing just fine.
“You put it on the goal and it's a big advantage,” Quest said.
After their date with Cortland, the Maroons will wait for their Section III, Class AA playoff seedings on Sunday.
Playing their final regular-season home game for Auburn were seniors Porten, Slayton, Kelsey Quest, Brittany Rabuano, Sarah Green, Stefanie Spinney and Rachael Applebee.
