A head-on car accident just north of the state Thruway interchange in Weedsport sent three people to University Hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries Wednesday night, officials said.

Cayuga County sheriff's deputies said the accident happened when a Dodge pick-up truck traveling south on Route 34 crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a four-door Mercury near the Trombley Road intersection at 7:38 p.m.

Deputies said a 36-year-old woman driving the Mercury was transported to University Hospital by helicopter, while two males, a 79-year-old driver and 22-year-old passenger, were transported by ambulance.

Investigators were still looking into the cause of the accident, and confirmed that the truck's passenger made a vague statement about swerving to avoid debris that may have fallen from a third vehicle, deputies said.

No debris was found at the accident scene, and deputies were still waiting to interview both drivers after their conditions improved.

Deputies said they hoped to finish the investigation by Friday afternoon, and would release the victim's names after they notified their families.
