AUBURN - The Auburn girls swim team swam against two squads Wednesday night, and although they lost one, it seemed that everyone came away with something to be happy about.

Auburn junior Ashley King swims in the 200-yard freestyle during Wednesday's meet against Fayetteville-Manlius and Utica Proctor. King finished second with a time of 2:06.31.
The meet, which was treated like two separate meets, saw Auburn lose a shot at a league title by falling to Fayetteville-Manlius 94-76, while defeating Utica Proctor 94-73.
Some of coach Tom Clary's swimmers competed against the undefeated Hornets, while girls that might normally have to sit out during a big meet got a chance to show the Maroons' depth.
“It was a chance for our top-line swimmers to race against other real good swimmers,” he said, “swimming with Utica was a chance for the rest of the team that might not have gotten a chance to swim in this meet to have real good races. As it turned out we had good races in both and real good times in both meets from both groups of kids.”
The Maroons were stifled by the Hornets and multi-event winner Ally Anderson. Fayetteville-Manlius won eight events, including all three relays. Auburn couldn't quite pull off the depth to overtake F-M, going two-three in only three events.
“They're a little faster and a little deeper than us, but at least we raced to the challenge of trying to win it,” Clary said.
Despite the loss, the Maroons got to preview some of the toughest competition Section III has to offer. With the sectional meet is coming up in just a few weeks, it provided Auburn with good competition and some swimmers were able to swim lifetime bests.
Makenzie Hauger, who won the 100 breaststroke and finished second in three other events, turned in a personal best in the 200 individual medley and the breaststroke. Kelsey Roe also did well in all four events that she swam, winning the 100 butterfly.
“In swimming you know ahead of time what the final score is going to be - assuming there's not a flood or a fire or something,” Clary said. “The goal for our top-line swimmers was to improve on what we've already done this year, which we did. The majority of our top-line swimmers were all faster today than previously.”
The Maroons were able to handle the Raiders easily, swimming exhibition in two races. Both Clary and Proctor coach Jeff Friedel were both pleased with the meet.
“We had a lot of lifetime best swims,” Clary said. “I won't know until tomorrow, but I think we had about 25 lifetime bests.”
It gave Friedel's team, who are weaker than in previous years, a chance to have competition.
“We were doing well instead of being beaten 1-2-3 in other meets like against Liverpool and F-M,” Friedel said.
Both coaches were discussing holding the same type of meet next year, but for now the Maroons will concentrate on the remaining weeks of the 2008 season. Auburn (7-2) hosts Liverpool next Wednesday on Senior Night. The Warriors will present a challenge similar to that of the Hornets.
“It's another chance two weeks before sectionals to measure where we're at,” Clary said. “They'll go in-event like we did today and have to race again. It's what you want, you want them to be challenged.”
