This week, we spotlight D.J. Wellauer.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of the job?
A: When people come to the YMCA, they are already motivated. But the rewarding part is I think giving them the tools and the resources so they can be empowered themselves to realize their potential. The motto here is mind, body, spirit. It's not all just about body, and this is really what my life motto is, too. So when people come to my classes, they know I care about the total person. And it is really something that is a passion of mine.
Q: What is the biggest challenge?
A: That I expect the best out of myself. I feel like I should be on top of the game so that they have a real example in me. However, my goal is to impress on people so that they can realize their best. I really believe in empowering a person so they take what they learn here and put it in every area.
Q: Describe your ideal workout.
A: I would say cardio is really important to me, personally. I actually run between 60 to 75 minutes every day. Also, along with teaching a class, I go to pilates class. My class is a core class, and though we use every muscle in the body, when you have a strong core, that helps you with whatever you do. But I also believe strongly in strength training because it builds muscle as well as bone density.
Q: What advice do you have for people who are trying to stay healthy and stay in shape?
A: Find what works for you. The important thing is to stay consistent. Most people can walk, and I would say keep walking. Other than that, find what you like and be consistent.
Q: What is the most common reason you hear people give for not exercising?
A: I hear different things, but I hear a lot of not enough time in the day. That's a problem for all of us. I would say a lot of people need direction. This is why instructors are here. I think people like classes because an instructor tells you what to do. You have other people in the same position as you.
Q: What is something about you that would surprise a member at the gym?
A: I have homeschooled four kids. And I really do eat, and I actually like to cook and bake. That would surprise people, I think.
