Piedmonte scored two goals - one on a penalty kick - in the 2-1 win victory at Jordan-Elbridge High School. On the penalty kick, Blue Devils goalie Randy Hoyt guessed right, but still couldn't deflect the shot
“I psyched him out,” Piedmonte said. “I try to do that all the time for penalty kicks. I just change it up each game.”
Penalty kicks aren't anything he's unfamiliar with - he has yet to miss one all season.
“Coach (James Best) has picked me quite a bit this year,” Piedmonte said. “It's also happened before with the goalie picking the side I go to.”
His second goal was unassisted after he found an opening in the Cato-Meridian defense.
“The foot skills we've been practicing the past few practices paid off,” Piedmonte said.
The Blue Devils' Rosalio Rojo scored the team's lone goal on a Jimmy Wilson assist.
“Jimmy and I just were doing a give-and-go,” Rojo said. “I saw an opening and took it.”
Rojo has been bothered by a torn quadricep all year but still has been a key contributor.
“It has affected me,” he said. “I haven't been able to run as much and my shots have been a little off by it.”
Hoyt finished with 10 saves for the Blue Devils, while the Eagles' Dan Herrling had seven. Compared to the last meeting, which ended in a 1-1 tie earlier this season, the improvements have been noticeable for winless Cato-Meridian.
“We had better shots today,” Blue Devils coach Dennis St. Amour said. “Whenever we touched the ball it seemed like it went to them. They may have hustled better today.”
Both teams are in the midst of a rebuilding year, while the Eagles also have a first-year head coach.
“I've been working on my patience as a coach,” Best said. “As a former player I want everyone to do well. I need to just be patient and also adapt better.”
Cato-Meridian (0-16-1) hosts Tully, Thursday while Jordan-Elbridge (4-12-1) hosts Fabius Pompey, Thursday.
“We still will work on our foot skills,” Best said. “Our awareness also will be something we concentrate on.”
