Officials are investigating the cause of a Poplar Ridge fire that destroyed a local couple's kitchen and damaged the rest of their Cape Cod-style home Friday, fire fighters said.
Poplar Ridge Fire Chief Bruce Besmer said a resident at 1462 Levanna Road, Poplar Ridge, was alerted to the fire by a smoke detector at 3 p.m. The resident then headed to a neighbor's house to call 911.
According to Cayuga County property records, the house is owned by Michelle and William Tracy. Besmer said the couple's kitchen was completely gutted while the rest of the house suffered smoke, heat and water damage, but was still salvageable.
Upon arriving to the scene, Besmer said it took firefighters 15 minutes to extinguish flames with the assistance of seven nearby fire departments.
None of the residents or the responding firefighters were injured, Besmer said, and all of the family's pets managed to get out unharmed.
Besmer said he did not know where the family was staying.
