What could be more patriotic than saving heating fuel? Use the least energy possible to feel patriotic and virtuous. Some tips may help.
Rather than heating entire rooms, strive to have a warm body. Leave the thermostat on OFF as long as possible, adding clothing to keep warm. Buttoning up a shirt, adding a necktie or scarf, and wearing a belt or sash to increase body heat.
Long skirts and nightwear are warmer than jeans or slacks. Men may prefer wearing sweats as a layer. A cotton turtleneck may combine with a vest or weskit, then a heavy, long wool sweater. To warm the feet, cover the head; even a small beanie adds noticeable warmth. In the 1980s, I gave a red flannel stocking cap to my boss as a joke. He wore it at home.
Sleeping warm in a cold bedroom may require flannel sheets, socks or water bottles. Electric blankets and sleeping pads, however, have been linked to cancer and other serious illnesses because of their electromagnetic fields (EMFs)
One small, radiant-type electric space heater, set at least four feet from a person (because of the EMFs), can help. The heat warms the body, not the room, so minimal use of one in a bathroom or other small area, can save money. Do not discard any left-over hot water until cool.
Gender, health, diet, and activity level determine tolerance for cold, I find a 58-60-degree setting comfortable and may go to 52 degrees at night. For one year I used a winter setting of 46 degrees, just to prove I could.
