Daylight savings time not worth the sleep disorders

Saturday, October 11, 2008 11:41 PM EDT

Sleep disorders is one of many health care issues in our great nation. Many of our sleep problems can be overcome if we just do away with daylight savings time. Mess with the patterns and cycles of sleep twice a year and, you bet we will develop sleep disorders. A lack of quality sleep is connected with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, cancer and more. When daylight savings time was implemented, there were very good reasons that we just don't have today. Today's farmers have electricity and lighted combines to help them get their work done - they are not as reliant on the sun for getting the work done anymore.
We are one of the only nations in the world who do this, and we have epidemic levels of sleep disorders as well as other health issues that are escalated by them. Proactive prevention is a key to good health, and this is one way we can be proactive. I have never met one single individual who likes the time change, or understands why we do it.

I have been an active volunteer in the public school system for 13 years and every teacher complains of the behavioral difficulties, attention difficulties, and interference with ability to focus on the material that the time change causes. We want better scores in academics for our nation, and this is a direct cause of lower test scores and academic achievement. I know it sounds menial in light of recent events, but this is one way to make changes that will lead to better health and better education.

Tired of being tired,

" Actually I like daylight savings time but hate eastern standard time. I would prefer darkness arriving later in the day. Just eliminate the shift 2xs a year. "

" I'm not keen on daylights savings time either, but there are a lot more factors at work in Americans' widespread problem with sleep disorders. Diet, medications, bad habits, drinking in the evening, contaminants which cause health problems in the environment, low-level noise pollution (such as caused by industrial wind turbines) -- all contribute as much or more to our collective chronic sleep disorder than the twice a year shift for daylight's savings time.

I imagine you do see it in schools more than elsewhere, though dairy farmers struggle with it as well. The cows have to have their milking time shifted over a couple days and not all at once or they get really messed up, for example. Clearly, changing the time is not natural. Arizona doesn't do it -- we could drop it too, and save money as well as lessening a negative impact on our health. "
