Weigh the issues, ‘Rock the Vote'

Rachel Robinson from MTV's “Road Rules” will visit Cayuga Community College next week to address a younger crowd of potential voters. The event, which was organized by CCC's Student Activities Board, aims to attract young voters who want to learn more about the important issues, said board member Brian Black.
“We just thought it was such a big election year,” Black, 26, said. “We wanted someone to come in and talk and get them more excited about voting.”

The board contacted the agency that coordinates Rock The Vote and Robinson was the person who was available for the appearance, Black said. Although Robinson is affiliated with MTV, this is not an official MTV-sponsored Rock The Vote event.

Black hopes to pack the house at the Irene A. Bisgrove Theater on the day of Robinson's visit. The Student Activities Board reached out to students at CCC, members of the community and high school seniors, he said.

“We're hoping that we get people to vote and that they're actually aware of the issues,” he said. “Everyone should vote but not if you don't know what's going on. If you don't know what's going on, your vote could potentially be detrimental to our government.”

Some people may vote one way or the other because they are registered for that party or because their parents tell them to, Black said. Robinson will educate the group about the voting process and will also encourage people to vote.

Director of Student Activities Norman Lee, who helped the Student Activities Board organize the event, believes it will touch on the power of the student voice in voting and will get students pumped up to vote.

“I think it's going to be a great program,” he said. “I hope we get a great turnout, not only from the students but also within the community.”

Black is also looking forward to hearing Robinson speak.

“I think it's important that we get people to vote and to come in and listen to what she has to say,” he said. “We're helping them get caught up with things.”
