AUBURN- Cicero-North Syracuse got its revenge on Friday.
The fifth-seeded Northstars upended the fourth-seeded Auburn girls tennis team 5-2 win a Section III, Class A quarterfinal match.
The Maroons won the first meet, 4-3, on Sept. 24.
“It was a much closer match the last time,” Auburn coach Shelly Connors said. “Both teams played better this time than they did the last meeting.”
Eighth grader Claire Minnoe defeated the Northstars' Lauren Osada in first singles (6-2, 6-3). Minnoe is one of three Maroons to qualify for individual sectionals.
“I felt good about my performance today,” Minnoe said. “It's been a great season for us.”
Auburn's other win came from Palak Patel in third singles (6-0, 2-6, 6-2). Patel finished her junior year 11-1, with her only loss coming in a match with Baldwinsville.
“Palak's play this year was unbelievable,” Connors said. “I don't know if it was mental or what, but she was awesome. She was so consistent and worked herself through holes. I wouldn't even need to talk to her after the first set cause I knew if she was down, she would just battle right back. I am looking forward to another year with her and Claire.”
The Maroons' Jenna Bruno lost second singles to Rachel Cary (4-6, 6-7, 6-4). Becca Cain and Meghan Storie defeated the first doubles team of Sam Bruno and Jamie Bruno (4-6, 6-4, 6-4). Auburn's first doubles team will join Minnoe at individual sectionals.
“They played so well today,” Connors said of the Brunos. “It's so hard to see anyone lose when they want it that bad. It just didn't go their way today.”
Alma Paskar and Jessica Geary defeated the Maroons' Katie Searing and Aishu Irri in second doubles (6-3, 3-6, 6-3). Fourth doubles Amy Farinelli and Sam Cadwallader fell to Alissa Mirizio and Lindsay Priest, 7-5, 6-3. Kara Mariano and Hanora Barron fell to Jordyn Kazel and Alex Buraczynski, 1-6, 7-5, 7-5.
“We had so many matches go three sets,” Connors said. “That shows you how even we were matched.”
