The Southern Cayuga boys soccer team lost a 2-1 nailbiter, giving up the Section IV IAC Division III title to Marathon on Wednesday.
All the scoring was done in the first half. The Chiefs' Casey Underwood scored on a header from Dylan Parmenter for the team's only goal.
Marathon posted a score five minutes later and then scored the winning goal with four minutes left in the half.
The Chiefs managed to hold Marathon back for the second half, but were kept from scoring themselves, putting the title in the hands of the third-ranked team in the state.
Southern Cayuga led in shots on goal, 9-5, and Marathon led in corner kicks, 5-2.
Kevin Stockton recorded nine saves in goal for the Chiefs.
“I was very proud of my team today,” Southern Cayuga coach Terry Underwood said. “We were down to one sub for this game, we played with 12 and many of the players who did play were injured and played valiantly. They gave every bit of effort.”
The Chiefs (14-2) will host Union Springs Friday in order to try and seal a wild-card spot.
Groton 4, Union Springs 3 OT
The Wolves led most of the way, with Eric Hlywa, Mark Ryan and Nick Schrimpton each posting a goal.
Also leading Union Springs was Jason Schenck and Mitchell Hares, who contributed one assist apiece.
Matt Orchard tallied nine saves in the cage for the Wolves.
Union Springs (5-11) will try and keep Southern Cayuga from a postseason attempt Friday.
SWIMMING
Auburn 95, West Genesee 88
Tracy Miller led Auburn with a win in the 100 butterfly (1:09.94) with her personal best and a sectional-qualifying time.
The Maroons also took a close second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:53.27), less than a tenth of a second away from first, with Tiffany Kline, Michaela Elliott, Molly Swartz and Molly Blair. Blair posted her lifetime best and a sectional-qualifying time in her leg of the relay (27.55) and in her participation in the 400 freestyle relay (1:01.23).
Kline also came from behind to take the 200 freestyle (2:15.87), Kelsey Roe won the 50 freestyle (27.09), Mallorie Dygert finished on top in the 500 freestyle (5:49.66) and the Maroons took the win in the 200 medley relay (2:06.93) with Makenzie Hauger, Dygert, Roe and Ashley King.
Bethany Schroeder finished second with a personal best and sectional-qualifying time in the 100 backstroke (1:11.90), Amanda Falsey topped her best times and qualified for sectionals in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.80) and Brigid Cotter placed second in her first time diving for Auburn (98.60).
The Maroons (5-1) travel to Nottingham today.
Skaneateles 97, Cortland 81
Racheal DeWitt led the Lakers with first-place finishes in the 200 IM (2:33.72), the 500 freestyle (5:57.72) and as a leg in the 200 medley relay (2:12.00) along with Mandi Steves, Gaelyn Price and Holly Ross.
Ross also won the 50 freestyle (28.17) and Price was a part of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:52.38) along with Britton Weber, Sarah Sawyer and Nikki Cole.
Sawyer won the 200 freestyle for Skaneateles (2:11.14) and Weber added another win in the 100 backstroke (1:12.35).
The Lakers (3-2) host Westhill and Corcoran Wednesday.

Mitch Alpha won the JV meet for the Eagles (18.07).
Jordan-Elbridge travels to the Bronx to participate in the Manhattan College Invitational this weekend.

With Tully as the second ranked team in the state in Class C and Pulaski ranking fifth, it was a hard-fought battle for the Warriors.
Erin Daly led the way for Weedsport, finishing 17th (19:34). Alyssa O'Bryan took 20th (19:51), Nicole Greer came in 23rd (20:21), Ashley Edmunds followed in 24th (20:25) and Michele Donahue ended in 26th place (21:23).
The Warriors (4-4) travel to the East Syracuse-Minoa Invitational Saturday.

Pacing the Blue Devils were Aubrey Campbell in 11th place (24:28), Jordan Wier in 12th (24:31), Angelina Argese in 18th place (26:19), Jessica Cushman in 20th (26:40), Kristin Roberts in 23rd (28:55), Erin Annett in 24th (29:01) and Jessica Bye finished 26th (29:31).

The Maroons defeated Cortland in their eighth shutout of the season.
Emily Parker scored the lone goal with Rashelle Glover on the assist. Goalie Connor Clifford earned six saves for the Maroons.
Ashley Green, Mackenzie Sheridan, Taylor Roeschlaub, Ashley Kukella and Christina Hyrynk played well at midfield for Auburn.
