It's not often that a 10th-place finisher earns the win for a cross country team. But that's what Kaylee Adler did (25:16) to give the Port Byron girls cross country team (5-6) the victory against Bishop Grimes/Bishop Ludden at home on Thursday.
In the Panthers' dual meet with Manlius Pebble Hill, Onondaga and Bishop Grimes/Bishop Ludden, Port Byron came out the clear winner against the first two teams - by 15-50 scores over MPH and Onondaga, but was knotted in a 28-28 tie with Bishop Grimes/Bishop Ludden. The Panthers earned the win when their sixth runner - Adler - crossed before the opponent did.
Senior Felica Darrow came in third for Port Byron (22:14). Nicole Carey took fourth (22:19) for a personal best, Christina Rooker placed fifth (23:40), senior Amanda Vitale finished seventh (24:02) and Heather Kurtz was ninth (24:59).
The Panthers boys' team (4-7) defeated Manlius Pebble Hill 22-37, but fell to Bishop Grimes/Bishop Ludden 24-33 and Onondaga 21-38. For the first time in a dual meet this season, Christian Cobb didn't finish in first overall, instead coming he took second (16:33) to Onondaga's Chris Martin by 21 seconds. Mike Borst took third (18:20), Zac Leja was fifth (19:01), Tyler Wellington placed sixth (20:00) and Will Rice was seventh (20:50).
The Panthers will compete at the OHSL Patriot League meet in Tully on Wednesday.
