Moravia's Phillips wins IAC title

With a first-place finish, Jason Phillips led the Moravia boys cross country team to a fifth-place finish with 109 points in the IAC, Division II Championship at Stone Hedge Golf Course, Tuesday.
Phillips' win (16:29) was the second in a row and he improved his time from last year by a minute, earning him first team Division II honors.

“It was a very strong race for him,” Blue Devils coach Jan Hunsinger said.

Moravia's Joe Grobelny took 12th place (18:26) and earned second team Division II All-Star honors. Adam Wiethuechter came in 33rd (20:22), Alex Seaman placed 44th (22:49) and Richie Bentley finished 45th (22:39).

Southern Springs came in fourth place with 108 points. Alex Schmitt took sixth (17:26) to earn first team Division II honors.

J.D. Balloni was 21st (19:15), Zach Casper placed 24th (19:39), Riley Shurtleff took 34th (20:39) and Ryan Gill finished 39th (21:50).

The Moravia girls were unable to field a complete team, but Alicia McLaughlin came in sixth place (22:03) and was a first team all-star. Kayla Slater placed 11th (23:44) and Aimee Glenister came in 14th (24:21). Each were second team all-stars.

For Southern Springs, Michelle Wilmot was seventh (22:09) and earned first team Division II honors. Sarah Norton finished 18th (25:00) and Marie Foraker came in 24th (26:35).

Southern Springs modified runners Linda Balloni and Devan Barta took first in their race.

Moravia participates in the Whitney Point Invitational, Tuesday, while Southern Springs travels to the Marathon Invitational, Oct. 18.
