HIT: To the efforts local school districts are making to improve energy efficiency.
Throughout the area, schools are taking steps large and small to cut down on power consumption.
We applaud schools on this issue for a number of reasons. First, less energy use means lower energy bills, which are the taxpayers' responsibility. Second, greener schools are better for the environment. And third, these measures are providing wonderful educational opportunities for students.
MISS: To the people responsible for some suspicious fires in Auburn late last month.
The Auburn Police Department said it believes the same people may be responsible for a string of fires on Auburn's east side. Fortunately, no one has been hurt as a result of these senseless, dangerous acts.
HIT: To some cultural events in Auburn over the weekend that provided some outstanding family entertainment.
The first Schweinfest at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center on Sunday offered an amazing range of culture and art that appealed to all ages. The event truly was a reflection of the diverse programming the art center offers over the course of a year.
At the same time, the Cayuga County 4-H's Carnival of Fun was taking place at the Cornell Cooperative Extension facility. This event gave children and their families a chance to learn hands-on how many things work on a farm.
On Saturday, the Cayuga County Arts Council's Art in the Park program at Hoopes Park was a terrific celebration of local talent.
Thanks should go out to all of the event organizers and volunteers.
HIT: To Hospice of the Finger Lakes, which celebrated its 20th anniversary with a fundraiser on Saturday.
The courage and dedication hospice staff demonstrate is remarkable, and this area has been blessed to have such a valuable service. We certainly hope to be noting many more significant anniversaries for this organization in the future.
