Bailout cash should have gone straight to taxpayers

Sunday, October 5, 2008 11:40 PM EDT

I received a letter on the Internet. It suggests giving the $85 trillion bailout of AIG directly to each person over the age of 18. The estimated number of people 18+ is 200 million. Dividing 200 million adults 18 and over into $85 trillion = $42.5 million.
Assume a 30 percent tax rate which = $25.5 million. Uncle Sam gets that right back. But, every adult 18+ has $297,500 in his/her pocket. Married couples would have $595,000.

The writer goes on to suggest people would pay off their mortgages, repay college loans, save in a bank, buy a new car, invest in the market, pay for medical expenses.

The problem would be solved. From the bottom up! Economic boom! I strongly believe you would have a great deal more support from the constituents.

" Brew, I have to tell you something.

Just because you dont agree with my opinion does not mean I am the stupid one. In fact, if you want to see someone who is truly ignorant, I suggest you buy a mirror. "

" Anonymoose you can't possibly be a critic to this post, as you have made many, many more foolish statements than hers. You are the poster child for stupid posts. "

" I think these figures came from one of the E-mails that is circulating on the Internet. The problem with these "jokes" is that people don't check them out and believe they are true. Snopes.com is a good source to check things out. "

" 85 billion divided by 200 million is $425 dollars. This is a supposedly funny e-mail that's been circulating around the internet for a few weeks. My problem isn't with Ms. Jordan (who really should have done the math) but with the Citizen for letting this tripe into print. It's clear they didn't do the math either. "

" Where are you getting these numbers? Are you confusing billions and trillions? Try doing a little more research before you open your mouth. You sound like a politician. "

" Wow, how incredibly stupid this shows the American people to be. If you did the math, you would find out that you would not even be able to afford a flat screen TV. Can you believe the number of motons that fall for this joke? "
