Helmer scores two touchdowns in loss

DJ Helmer had 26 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns and the Port Byron football team held a five-point advantage at halftime, but its defense surrendered 21 second-half points in a 28-20 loss to South Lewis, Saturday.
The Panthers' Caleb Green added a touchdown on a 22-yard interception return in the fourth quarter.

Port Byron was led defensively by Jordan Stevens (seven tackles, one sack) and Ryan Eldridge (five tackles, one sack).

The Panthers (1-4) travel to Tully, Friday.

Shelby Gilbert led the Panthers with a goal, while Kellie Redmond had one save.

BOYS SOCCER

Homer 3, Auburn 2

Brendon Burke and Conor Soules each scored a goal for the Maroons. Adam Cadwallader had 10 saves, including two on penalty kicks. The Maroons had 10 shots on goal and a coner kick.

Auburn (2-9 overall, 1-9 in league) travels to Waterloo, Tuesday.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Southern Springs, 11th place

Alex Schmitt led the Chiefs with a 23rd-place finish (18:00), Zach Casper came in 50th (19:04) and J.D. Balloni was 52nd (19:07). Ryan Gill took 80th (22:32) and Sam Ayers placed 86th (22:49).

Liverpool Invitational

Port Byron, 154 points

Christian Cobb took 15th for the Panthers (18:20) and Mike Borst placed 30th (20:29). Zac Leja finished 31st (20:35), Tyler Wellington finished 38th (22:30) and Robert Johnson was 40th (21:04).

Port Byron (3-5) hosts Onondaga, Manlius Pebble Hill and Bishop Grimes-Bishop Ludden, Wednesday.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Tully Invitational

Southern Springs, Inc.

Michelle Wilmot was 37th (23:25), while Sarah Norton took 44th (25:50). Marie Foraker came in 52nd (27:42).

“Everyone that participated improved their times compared to last year,” Southern Springs coach Joe Sullivan said.

Port Byron, 172 points

Nicole Carey took 28th (24:18) and Felicia Darrow came in 29th (24:48) for the Panthers.

Christina Rooker placed 30th (25:48), while Amanda Vitale finished 30th in another flight (26:19). Heather Kurtz came in 31st (27:20).

JV SOCCER

Fayetteville-Manlius 2, Auburn 1, OT

Rashelle Glover scored Auburn's only goal while Connor Clifford had 14 saves.

The Maroons lost earlier in the week to the Hornets 5-0.
