It is a well-known fact that the Cayuga Indians had sold the land that they once lived on here in the Finger Lakes and in return they were paid many times over by the State of New York. Now the Cayugas have bought some land back in this area and they feel that they are the landlords of the area once again.
When the Cayugas first came back into this area a few years ago, they stated that they wanted to be good neighbors - oh really!
Since then, the property owners have been threatened with eviction, watched land being bought up in both Cayuga and Seneca counties with the idea of having it taken off the tax rolls forever by applying to put it into Federal Trust Land. And trying to open and run bingo halls next to our high school in Union Springs. And now we have Indian-owned businesses being operated in both counties without collecting sales tax.
Clint Halftown makes statements like UCE is racist when in fact UCE has done nothing wrong but put a motorcade together to send a message to Gov. Paterson to collect taxes for the state. In 1991, the Supreme Court passed the law that the State of New York had the right to collect taxes from Indian enterprises. Since then, the law makers in Albany have passed the law more than once to collect these taxes, but as of today, our weak governors have refused to obey the law.
Attacks on groups that see that playing fields are not level have a right to express their views without the wrongful statements of racism!
