“It felt great to end our home season in this fashion,” Wolves' senior Jason Schenck said.
Schenck recorded two goals and an assist for the Wolves, while Eric Hlywa led the offense with a hat trick and three assists.
“It felt really nice to get the hat trick,” Hlywa said. “I always strive for one, but it's not easy.”
That's been the case for the Wolves this season with wins. In the past they have had to come back or play head-to-head, but that wasn't necessary Thursday.
“It was nice to get off to that quick start,” Wolves head coach Jim Hodges said. “Today we came out strong and with a lot of energy.”
The Wolves led 5-0 at half and took off from there. The defense also recorded its second shut out in a row.
“We've grown as a team,” Hodges said. “Our true test comes Monday.”
Monday Union Springs (5-9 overall, 5-2 Division III of IAC) will travel to No. 3 state- ranked Marathon.
“That will be a true challenge for us,” he said.
In order for the Wolves to be successful, they hope to duplicate a lot of what happened Thursday. As a team they took 38 shots on goal and 10 corner kicks. Matt Orchard saved two shots, while Nick Shrimpton, Justin Lyndaker and Dan Bowers each had two goals. Matt Besner, Dan Bowers, Ricky Jackson and senior Joe Feocco each scored a goal.
“Ricky is one of the hardest workers on our team,” Hodges said. “I was so happy to see him score.”
Lyndaker assisted two goals. Mitch Hares, Mark Ryan, Schenck, Shrimpton and Besner each had an assist.
“It was my goal heading into the season to score on my senior night,” Schenck said. “It felt so good today to get this win. It was a total team effort.”
The Blue Devils Dylan Turner saved 26 shots on goal, while Camieron Hartnett had 10 and Shealena Marnell saved three.
“They give it their all,” Blue Devils coach Brian Rozewski said. “It's a learning process for us, but I was pleased with their performance.”
The Blue Devils had nine shots on goal.
“We really switched the field well today,” Rozewski said. “I was pleased with that side of the game.”
Moravia (1-12) hosts Southern Cayuga Monday.
The Wolves were able to score a few back-to-back shots.
“It's always nice when your able to do that,” Hlywa said. “You pick up a lot of energy and that's something we needed today.”
Union Springs would like to stay healthy and still has to work on its defense as it prepares for Section IV, Class C playoffs.
“We need to organize our defense,” Hodges said. “We need to know our marks and be at our best. I am so happy that this is the way the seniors Feocco, Schenck and Sean Zimmer are going out. They have done so much for this program even back in middle school. So many kids have contributed to our success this year and today. It's a great thing for me to see.”
Union Springs has set its sights on IAC Playoffs.
“We got to get a lot better,” Schenck said. “We need to stick together defensively. I think we can pull together and make runs.”
