Clinching their fourth consecutive OHSL Patriot League title on Wednesday, the Weedsport boys cross country team remains undefeated this season.
The Warriors beat Fabius Pompey, 22-33, Manlius Pebble Hill, 17-44 and DeRuyter, 15-50.
“We are ranked third in the state right now in Class D,” Warriors coach John Lawler said. “The guys are really excited right now - the worst we could do is tie for the championship title.”
Mike Greer took top honors for Weedsport (17:07), Jon Bos took third (17:42) and Andrew Smith followed in fourth (17:53) after a spill on the course.
“(Smith) fell during the race while contending for first place,” Lawler said. “He and (Greer) were both leading the way when he slipped and took a fall down a steep hill, he finished really well though coming in with blood streaming down his legs from the cuts on his knees.”
Also finishing for the Warriors was Zack Field in seventh position (18:20) and Logan Thompson rounded it out in ninth place (18:34).
Weedsport (9-0) hosts Pulaski and Tully Wednesday, a dual meet they are working hard to prepare for especially with the Black Knights on an 86-meet winning streak.
“We have our work cut out for us,” Lawler said.
“One of our goals is to beat Tully but we are happy with the league title if that doesn't happen. We will be tapering slightly but we will work our hardest to try and take them. Pulaski is also one of the teams we have had to beat for the title in the last few years so it will be a good race.”
