AUBURN - The Auburn boys soccer team may lack experience, but their play doesn't show it.

Kaleb Maine-Brown makes a save for the Maroons in the first half of Thursday's game with Baldwinsville.
The upstart Maroons have improved with each game this season, which was never more evident than when they held state-ranked Baldwinsville to one goal in the first half at Auburn High School Thursday.
The Maroons were led by goalie Kaleb Maine-Brown with seven saves before he left the game due to a leg injury, as they fell 3-0 to the No. 13 Bees.
“Kaleb was outstanding and instrumental today,” said Maroons' first-year coach David Gregg.
“He had great saves and started trends for us. He's a very quick keeper. It was a tough loss for us when he went down.”
Adam Cadwallader came in to relieve Maine-Brown in the net for the Maroons, and finished with a save after allowing a goal.
The Bees' goals came from Hobie Raimien, Cody Spraker and Ryan Evans.
Paul Klpufa, Raimien and Kyle Rogers finished with an assist apiece. Baldwinsville's goalie PJ Goodwin had four saves in the shut out win.
“We did really good in the first half,” Gregg said.
“To be down only one against a very tough team, and top of that, we are a young team.
A lot of our freshman and sophomores are starting. They have stepped it up and played well on both sides of the ball. I'm very proud of them.”
The Maroons had just five shots on goal and no corner kicks, while Baldwinsville had 14 shots on goal and five corner kicks.
Gregg was pleased with the improvement the team has shown since he took over eight months ago.
“I see amazing growth from them every day,” Gregg said. “It's quite a progression each day.”
Even though the squad is largely made up of young players, seniors Brandon Burke and Ryan Cuddy stepped it up for the Maroons.
“They did their jobs today,” Gregg said. “The program growth has progressed greatly. I'm very excited for next year.”
Auburn (2-7 overall, 1-6 league) is at Marcellus, Saturday.
“I can't ask for anything more for Saturday,” Gregg said.
“We need to play the same ball as today. Our growth and progression has been amazing. We didn't do much wrong today., which is quite the accomplishment against such a tough team.”
The Maroons hope to repeat the success they had with their offensive game and backfield play.
“We dominated the air game today,” Gregg said. “We made (Baldwinsville) work for that.”
Making other teams work has become a trend for Maroons this season, something the team wasn't too accustomed to last season, and even in the beginning of this year.
That in itself is almost reward enough for their coach.
“It's like watching your family,” Gregg said. “Only the progression hasn't taken years, but only days and weeks. I'm just amazed by it.”
