The public will have multiple opportunities over the next two days to pay respects to the Throop native who was killed last week while serving for the military in Afghanistan.
The body of Marine Sgt. Jerome C. Bell Jr. will be brought to Auburn on Friday with a motorcade that will include dozens of vehicle traveling from the Syracuse airport, Cayuga County Sheriff David Gould confirmed. Exact routes and times are not possible to predict, but Gould expects the procession to arrive at the Weedsport Thruway interchange between 1:15 and 2 p.m.
The motorcade will include motorcycles and patrol vehicles from the Syracuse and Auburn police departments, along with the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office. The lead vehicles will rotate depending upon the location.
In addition, perhaps as many as 50 motorcyles from the Patriot Guard Riders will take part at the request of Bell's family. The Patriot Guard is a nationwide collection of riders who attend services for fallen soldiers as a show of respect.
The Friday motorcade will travel down Route 34 into Auburn. It is expected to ride to Genesee Street, and then head west toward Columbus Street on its way to Cheche Funeral Home, Ted Cheche said. Calling hours are scheduled from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday.
The funeral service takes place 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Church in downtown Auburn.
After the roughly hour-long service, a procession will go past Auburn's Memorial City Hall, where it will pause. The city hall bell, known as “Old Wheeler,” will be rung in respect.
Auburn Mayor Michael Quill has invited the public to join him and city employees there or at point along the procession route.
Area fire departments also will be set up along the route in tribute.
Burial will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Fleming. Parking will be allowed at the Auburn High School parking lot, and deputies will be there to help people cross the road to the cemetery.
